ALEXANDRIA, VA — Alexandrians will see a familiar site in "Wonder Woman 1984," which came out on streaming and theaters on Christmas.

The now-shuttered Landmark Mall is featured as a filming location for the movie starring Gal Gadot. But as patrons of the former mall will see, the mall looks a lot different when portrayed in the movie.

"Wonder Woman 2: 1984" is the sequel to the 2017 movie, based on the character from the DC Entertainment comic books created by William Moulton Marston. The film takes place in the 1980s as Wonder Woman faces villains Max Lord and The Cheetah.

Filming took place at the mall as well as locations in DC during 2018. Aside from recognizing the Landmark Mall cameo, locals noticed a discrepancy with filming at a DC Metro stop.

Despite the pandemic's impacts on theaters around the U.S., "Wonder Woman 1984" had the most successful box office opening so far in the pandemic, the Associated Press reported. The movie, available on streaming through HBO Max and in theaters, generated $16.7 million during the Christmas weekend opening. The movie was originally scheduled to come out in 2019, but the opening had been pushed back several times.

The Landmark Mall, meanwhile, could see a long-awaited redevelopment come to fruition. City of Alexandria officials, developers, and Inova Health System announced an initial agreement for a mixed-use development anchored by an Inova hospital. The current Inova Alexandria Hospital would be relocated from the current Seminary Road location, allowing Inova to offer a larger emergency room, private patient rooms, and open the Inova Schar Cancer Institute at Alexandria Hospital with full cancer services.

Many of Landmark Mall's stores closed in 2017, and the Sears location closed earlier in 2020. The mall had been used as temporary space for Carpenter's Shelter while its new building was being constructed; the shelter's new location recently opened.

You can Watch "Wonder Woman 1984" on HBO Max or in local theaters like AMC Hoffman Center.
