This newly renovated Edgerton home was once a 19th-century church. Now it's for sale.

An Edgerton home that was once a Methodist church is now for sale.

The property, at 344 Craig Road, is the perfect combination of historic and modern.

It was built in 1872 and was home to the Albion Prairie Church until 2014 when the congregation relocated. In December 2013, it was purchased for $115,000 by a tile company owner who gutted the building and began remodeling it into a home.

Nick and Kayla Schremp, the home's current owners, purchased it from the tile company owner in August 2018 and completed the remodeling process. They transformed the church into a 3,609-square foot home with four bedrooms, three full bathrooms and a finished basement.

The home is currently listed for $580,000.

While the Schremps replaced all the mechanicals and the roof, they preserved many of the church's original features including the stained glass windows.

"The outside looks the same as it has for 100 years," Nick Schremp said.

Even the original church bell is still there, and yes, you can ring it.

Additionally, the Schremps designed a large, arching wine rack where the altar once stood and incorporated it into the stone archway that reaches the home's 16-foot ceilings.

"It's a massive open concept," said realtor Sean Smith. "The use of space and the way they were able to maintain some of the original stained glass throughout the home and incorporate it in different parts of the home ... I think is phenomenal."

The home sits on a half-acre on a hill overlooking Rice Lake. It has a fenced-in backyard with a patio and a hot tub. Silverwood County Park is nearby, and the home is about five minutes from Lake Koshkonog. Nick Schremp said there are four neighbors.

The home is three-minute drive from Interstate 90, and it's about 25 minutes from both Madison and Janesville. It is an hour from Downtown Milwaukee.

As Smith puts it, the home offers "country living without being removed from society."

Public showings begin  July 8, and a public open house will be held that weekend.
