Newport County tops 200 COVID reported cases in a week for the first time since mid-April

Newport County reported the highest number of COVID cases in a single week since mid-April and continued to trend in the wrong direction for the third consecutive week.

According to the latest data from the state Department of Health released Wednesday, there were 215 cases of the virus identified in Newport County during the seven-day span of Nov. 25 to Dec 1. That’s the highest single-week count since 221 cases were identified between April 15-21.

It also marks the third straight week the number of cases has risen in the county. There were 85 combined cases reported during the week of Nov. 4-10; 157 cases from Nov. 11-17; and 192 cases from Nov. 18-24.

Since the state Department of Health began tracking the figures in March 2020, there now have been a total of 9,557 reported COVID cases in Newport County.

Jamestown from Nov. 25 to Dec. 1 reported 17 cases, the highest number in that town since the week of Jan. 21-27, when it identified 22 cases. Tiverton added 50 new cases to its toll, up from 29 the previous week.

There were 55 new cases in Newport, the most in the city since it reported 56 cases from Oct. 7-13. Middletown reported 46 new cases, down from 52 a week ago, and Portsmouth added 44 cases to its total. Little Compton reported three new cases.

Since the start of the pandemic, Newport has identified the most total cases with 3,149, followed by Tiverton (1,916), Middletown (1,907), Portsmouth (1,838), Jamestown (476) and Little Compton (271).

Newport County vaccination rate

Some 71% of people living in Newport County are fully vaccinated as of Nov. 30, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers someone fully vaccinated two weeks after they've been given a single-dose shot (Johnson & Johnson) or a second shot (either Pfizer or Moderna).

Rhode Island reported 191,763 total cases of coronavirus, an increase of 2% from the week before.
