Here's why the Marina Cafe and Pub is closing

It came as a surprise to everyone when the Marina Cafe and Pub on Goat Island announced on social media it would be closing its doors permanently, even to the man who made the decision, owner Richard Sardella.

On Jan. 15, the seasonal establishment posted on Facebook it would be going out of business because its landlord — IDC Inc. owner Tom Roos — rejected Sardella's proposal to extend the lease on the building. The restaurant had been operating for 13 years under an informal lease — "a gentlemen's agreement" — that had expired.

Reporter Savana Dunning spoke to Sardella, a former mayor of Newport, about what transpired leading up to the closure announcement.

The Pell hotel set to open in Middletown ahead of tourist season

Want that downtown Newport hotel feel without paying that downtown Newport price? A hotel expected to open in the coming months could fit the bill. The Pell, located at the former Ramada Inn in Middletown, will be a modernized lodging facility with 127 rooms.

And if you happen to be a restaurateur, the dining space in the hotel could be yours.

Rogers trio putting up numbers — and wins

The Rogers High School boys basketball team is off to a strong start this season thanks to a trio of scorers. While Elijah Neal, Darian Piker and Izayah King like putting the ball in the basket, they say winning is the only thing that matters.

Portsmouth woman won't let cancer run her life

A dedicated runner, Kara Niewohner of Newport was forced to scale back the miles when she was diagnosed with breast cancer last spring. The 44-year-old underwent a double mastectomy in October and has resumed full training in preparation for the Boston Marathon in April.
