Newport News airport rebrands — drops ‘international’ from its name

The airport at 900 Bland Blvd. in Newport News has finally found its true self.

Known for decades as the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport, the airport has quietly dropped the “International” from its title in its marketing. Instead, its website and logo now refer to it as the “Newport News Williamsburg Airport.”

Victoria Hall, the airport’s marketing and public relations manager, said the airport started rebranding about a year ago and has gradually phased in the shorter title with hopes of getting “a new image on the company.”

“We actually did do a rebranding,” she said. “We dropped the international from the title, mainly just to streamline it, just because it is a longer title.”

While the airport is still officially Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport, Hall said the “international” is being dropped for branding and marketing purposes as it made the airport’s title seem too long. She said airports across the country are ditching “international” from their titles.

“We decided to shorten the length of the airport’s name since it was such a mouthful before,” Hall said in an email. “We wanted to make it shorter for appearances on any social media, websites, or physical media.”

She said the change has gone unnoticed and noted people often refer to the airport as “Newport News Airport” anyway.

She also noted that most of the airport’s flights are domestic — not international.

“While we do have the (international) capabilities, we don’t have a constant international flight coming in,” she said. “Most of the international flights that we do now are more chartered through the military for any deployers they may have going out. So we don’t have any airline right now that’s supporting a constant international flight.”

The airport currently services two airlines: Avelo Airlines and American Airlines. Avelo started service with the airport in October.
