Newport News police identify motorcyclist killed in crash

Newport News police released the name of a motorcyclist who died Friday night after a crash.

In a news release Monday, police said 31-year-old Rafi Welsh, of Newport News, was riding a motorcycle in the area of Blue Crab Road and Canon Boulevard when he crashed.

Police were called at 5:14 p.m. about the incident.

When first responders arrived, they believed Welsh’s injuries were not life-threatening. He was taken to a hospital where police said his condition was downgraded to life-threatening.

He died from his injuries later that night, according to police.

Police said the motorcycle was the only vehicle involved. No information has been released about what caused the crash.
