Newport News program offering free access to local attractions returns after pandemic cancellation

A program that allows Newport News residents to explore local attractions for free is returning after it was canceled last year because of the pandemic.

The Ambassador Pass program — now in its 22nd year — gives city residents and employees free access to several attractions including museums and historic homes on select days throughout the month of January.

The passes are available for pickup through Jan. 28 at three locations: the Newport News Visitor Center at 13560 Jefferson Ave., Newport News Tourism Office at 702 Town Center Dr. and the city’s communications office on the sixth floor of City Hall. Individuals requesting a pass will need to provide proof of city residency or current city employment.

Passes will be honored at the following locations on the specified dates:

  • Jan. 8-14: Lee Hall Mansion (open Thursday-Saturday), Virginia Living Museum

  • Jan.15: James A. Fields House

  • Jan. 15-21: Endview Plantation (open Thursday-Saturday), Peninsula SPCA and Barnyard (open Monday-Saturday)

  • Jan. 22: Lee Hall Depot

  • Jan. 22-28: Virginia War Museum (open Thursday-Saturday), The Mariners’ Museum

For more information about the program call the Newport News Visitor Center at 757-886-7777.
