Newport police identify Middletown woman killed in Wednesday crash

Newport police have released the identity of the woman who was killed Wednesday when the electric bicycle she was riding collided with a bucket truck.

According to police, Kayla Watson, 34, of Middletown, was pronounced dead at Newport Hospital following the crash that occurred around 7:50 a.m.

Police said Wednesday that Watson was traveling west on Admiral Kalbfus Road when a bucket truck, operated by James Drape, 53, of South Attleboro, Massachusetts, struck the bicycle while making a left-hand turn to Hillside Avenue, running Watson over.

Drape was cited for Obedience to Devices (Red Light) and Due Care by drivers. Police on Thursday said the Attorney General's Office was still reviewing the crash to determine if any criminal charges would be filed.
