News briefs: Gates Foundation-Ross County Scholar’s Fund marks 20 years

CHILLICOTHE - The latest class of The Gates Foundation-Ross County Scholar’s Fund recipients has been announced, with the award of scholarships to 15 continuing and incoming university students.

Larry Gates and his wife, Mary, established the fund to help Ross County students realize their college ambitions, and the endeavor now spans two decades. This marks the 20th class of scholars with approximately 275 scholarships awarded since the fund’s inception in 2004.

Following is a list of the 2023-24 recipients:

  • Isabella Fisher - Mount Saint Joseph University

  • Kayla Fitzpatrick - Ohio University, Chillicothe campus

  • Drew Lane - The Ohio State University

  • Gabriel Mallow - Ohio University, Athens campus

  • Jenna Martin - Colorado State University

  • Addison Mohan - Ohio University, Athens campus

  • Nicholas Nesser - Ohio University, Chillicothe campus

  • Donovan Palmer - The Ohio State University

  • Lucz Rutherford - Ohio University, Chillicothe campus

  • Jarrett Seebohm - Ohio University, Athens campus

  • Aiden Spaulding - University of Cincinnati

  • Mikayla Spaulding - Ohio University, Athens campus

  • Gabriel Stark - Ohio University, Athens campus

Hannah Thompson - Ohio University, Chillicothe campusGates Foundation directors include Nicole McLaughlin, Michelle Shanholtzer, Matthew Haller, Kimberly Hirsch, Nancy Harris, Jack Jeffery and Valerie Miller. Since the scholarship fund was initiated, the membership of the committee has remained intact.

“We are appreciative of the dedication of the committee members,” Mary and Larry Gates said. “These individuals reflect the spirit of the scholarship fund in helping make this vision become a reality.”

Grand opening set for new Circleville Goodwill

The new Circleville Goodwill store on Morris Road in front of the former Carnival Foods will have its grandopening on Tuesday, July 18.

The new 9,000-square-foot store features a covered donation drive thru and will open at 9 a.m. on July 18after a brief ribbon cutting with the Pickaway County Chamber of Commerce. Goodwill’s Pickaway ServicesCenter which provides day services to individuals with disabilities moved into a new 3,000-square-foot areaadjacent to the store on July 1.

“We’re excited to finally open in the new location after some construction delays. In addition to the usualthrift items, the store will have several new goods for sale,” said Goodwill CEO Marvin Jones. “We think thecommunity will appreciate the more modern shopping experience and especially the covered donation drivethru. Our new center also will provide needed additional space to serve more individuals with disabilities inthe community.”

WKKJ’s Christina Wolford will broadcast live from the grand opening between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Duringthat time, the center also will be selling hotdogs, chips, and pop to raise money for its activities fund, andthere will be a spinning wheel to win door prizes donated from various businesses in the community.Hours at the new store will remain the same from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday thru Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6p.m. on Sunday. Donations are accepted during business hours only. The current store on U.S. 23 is set toclose on Monday, July 17.

Meetings

The Colerain Township Board of Trustees will hold its regular monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, July 10 at the fire department annex building in Hallsville.

Huntington Township will hold a public hearing at 6 p.m. July 11, at the Huntington Township Fire House. The purpose of the hearing is for the 2024 Annual Tax Budget prepared by the Fiscal Officer of Huntington Township of Ross County, for the next succeeding fiscal year ending Dec. 31, 2024.
