CHILLICOTHE -- Goodwill Childcare will be hosting a hiring event on Wednesday, June 7 for its new center on Western Avenue which will open later this summer.

Anyone interested in working at the center as a teacher, assistant teacher (aide), or an administrative assistant is encouraged to stop by 2541 Western Ave. (next to the Goodwill store) between noon and 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 7. Childcare Administrator Maryanne Queen and Goodwill of South Central Ohio Missions Coordinator Cana Horner will be among those on hand to answer questions and conduct interviews.

“We are so excited about putting together our team and getting the chance to serve families in a new and different way from how we have in the past,” Queen said.

Prospective employees will get a tour of the facility, which previously housed the corporate offices, and learn more about the center and its mission to strengthen the community by providing an environment where children are safe, nurtured and stimulated, allowing their families to re-enter or remain in the workforce and live the lives they envision.

Work to obtain licensure and get the center ready has been ongoing since December when Goodwill’s board approved moving forward with opening a center. An Open House for families and guardians interested in enrolling children at the center will be scheduled at a later date. Those interested may text CHILDCARE to 844- 940-2300 to get an alert when enrollment begins and the Open House is scheduled.

Liberty Camp returns July 31- Aug. 4

CHILLICOTHE -- Children ages 9-12 learn about the American Revolution with hands on, fun activities at Liberty Camp this summer.

Liberty Camp is back for year five and will run from July 31-Aug. 4. Previous years were full with 40 campers. Cost $25 includes T-shirt and all craft supplies, food

This is not a vacation bible school. It is a camp sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution that teaches kids about the founding of our country and the American Revolution. It is held on the grounds of the First Presbyterian Church at 13 Mead Drive. No political or religious affiliation.

Historical reenactors take the roles of Revolutionary War militiamen, camp followers, housewives and founding fathers. Meet George and Martha Washington, King George, Alexander Hamilton and Benjamin Franklin. Children learn about camp life in a Revolutionary War militia camp, weaponry, the perspective from a British Soldier, the Declaration of Independence and the Edenton Tea Party. They will be active participants in the Battle of Lexington and Concord, the Boston Tea Party, and Valley Forge. The debate between Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton allow the children to make their own decisions about the government and discover that compromise is the answer to complicated issues.

Campers take home tri corn hats, haversacks, camp T-shirt, Constitutions, and their handmade crafts of tin punched items, games and hornbooks, plus the items they purchase with the gold coins they earn throughout the week. Each evening children are served hot dogs, chips, a sweet and a drink, but only after sampling colonial snacks such as queen cakes, johnny cakes, Boston brown bread and making their own butter and root beer. Colonial games include hoops and sticks, three legged races, militia man relay races and militia man camp games.

The campers are divided into companies of 10 Patriots with group Captains leading them through the events of each evening. A game, a craft, a snack and three learning stations. They meet from 6 to 9 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church at 13 Mead Drive. Most activities take place outside weather permitting, but arrangements are in place for rainy weather and inside events when necessary. There is no political or religious affiliation with the camp.

Visit Facebook page – Ross Liberty Camp -- to see pictures and videos. Register your child by emailing reepterressa@yahoo.com. Total cost of camp per child is $25 for the week. Participation is limited to the first 40 children to register and pay fee.
