Grants available for Ottawa County destination developments

PORT CLINTON  —  A new Destination Development Grant is available to assist Ottawa County businesses, organizations and communities in developing activities or projects that will attract and engage visitors, serve and educate regional tourism partners and generate economic growth for communities and the region through travel and tourism development. The grant is in addition to the sponsorship grant programs that will continue to be offered.

Recipients could include local governments, for-profit enterprises and nonprofit organizations. Grant requirements must be met. If a for-profit enterprise is the lead or a partner applicant, the project must reflect an economic benefit for the municipality or county at large. Projects should target the development of quality-of-place amenities, attractions, and facilities that enhance the visitor experience and foster connectivity with the specific destination or geographic area.

Informational meetings will be held at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Thursday and Aug. 10 at the Shores and Islands Ohio West Welcome Center, 770 S.E. Catawba Road.

Application proposals are being accepted and will be due by 5 pm Sept. 23. For more information, contact Destination Development Director, Amanda Smith Rasnick, at amanda@shoresandislands.com or 419-625-2175.

FCT to hold auditions for 'Avenue Q'

FREMONT — Fremont Community Theatre will hold first auditions for the “rated R” musical comedy “Avenue Q” that will be performed Sept. 30-Oct. 2 and Oct. 7-9.

Auditions will take place at FCT, 1551 Dickinson Ave., at 7 p.m. Sunday and Monday. This laugh-out-loud musical tells the timeless story of a recent college grad named Princeton, who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. He soon discovers that, although the residents seem nice, it's clear that this is not your ordinary neighborhood.

Filled with humor and a catchy score, not to mention puppets, Avenue Q is a unique show. Auditioners should come prepared to sing at least 16 bars from a song of their choice, one that showcases their vocal range and ability, and should also bring a copy of their chosen music to the audition. Auditioners may also be asked to learn fragments of a song that could show off a particular character’s voice.
