Murrysville enters into new trash contract

Murrysville council voted 6-0 on June 16 to enter into a new five-year hauling and recycling contract with low bidder Republic Services.

The contract keeps the current price for customers during contract's first year. The bid outlines increases of 40 cents to 80 cents per year in the second through fifth years of the contract.

Export Borough is also part of the contract. Its council is expected to vote on the contract at their July 6 meeting, set for 6:30 p.m. at the borough building on Washington Avenue.

Winning Treasure Hunt ticket sold in Delmont

A lucky shopper at a Westmoreland County Walmart is holding a Pennsylvania Lottery ticket worth $138,357, officials announced.

The retailer along Hollywood Boulevard in Delmont sold a jackpot-winning Treasure Hunt ticket on June 9, according to the PA Lottery. The ticket matched all five balls: 1-12-14-26-27.

The chances of matching all five numbers for the jackpot are one in 142,506, according the lottery.

There were more than 44,100 other Treasure Hunt tickets with smaller winning prizes.

Walmart will get a $500 bonus for selling the ticket.

Backyard composting workshop set for July

The Pennsylvania Resource Council will host a July 14 backyard composting workshop, and participants can receive a composting bin following the class.

It will take place at 7 p.m. on the Zoom platform. Distribution of the bins will take place July 16 at the Murrysville municipal building, 4100 Sardis Road.

The cost is $70 per person. Register online at PRC.org by clicking on "Conservation Workshops" under the "Programs" menu.

Shredding event set for June 26 in Murrysville

State Rep. Bob Brooks, R-Murrysville, invites district residents to a shredding event set for 9-11 a.m., June 26 at Franklin Regional Senior High School.

Residents can drop off documents that contain sensitive information, and are invited to watch them be shredded at no cost.

There is a five-box limit, and the event is for residents and not businesses. It is limited to the first 150 cars.

Racquet club to expand

Officials from Murrysville Racquet Club were granted a conditional-use permit to expand the Route 22 facility to include six outdoor courts.

The courts will give the club the ability to serve as a potential host site for U.S. Tennis Association tournaments.

The outdoor courts will be open from dawn to dusk, according to developer Arshad Hafeez, who said there are no plans for bleachers or other seating.

Delmont shifts council meetings back to borough building

Delmont officials will move the monthly council meetings back to the borough building, after a few months of holding them at the new Delmont Public Library.

Meetings will take place on the second Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at the borough building, 77 Greensburg St.

TOPS group resumes weekly meetings

The Delmont chapter of Taking Off Pounds Sensibly, or TOPS, has resumed weekly meetings at 2:30 p.m., Tuesdays at Delmont Presbyterian Church, at 101 Church St.

The nonprofit weight support group is open to anyone, and prospective new members are invited to attend a meeting and learn about the program.

Murrysville-Export Rotary prepares for July 4 car cruise

The Murrysville-Export Rotary will hold a Fourth of July Car Cruise-In from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., July 4 at the Lamplighter in Salem.

The show will feature classic, muscle, antique, retro mod and special-interest cars and trucks. The first 200 entries will receive a dash plaque and gift bag with a $10 entry-fee donation.

The afternoon also will feature food and refreshments, a DJ, auction baskets and 50/50 prizes. The Lamplighter is at 6566 William Penn Highway. For details, call 412-677-8280 or 724-519-7369.
