News briefs: Harp honored for Meritorious Service to Ohio 4-H

CHILLICOTHE - Mary Harp of Chillicothe was honored for Meritorious Service to Ohio 4-H at the annual 4-H Volunteer Recognition Luncheon held March 11, at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. The recognition luncheon was part of an all-day 4-H educational conference.

The Meritorious Service Award recognizes adult 4-H volunteers for long-term meritorious service or a significant contribution to county or state 4-H programs. The award is sponsored by Nelson and Elizabeth Thomas and the Bea Cleveland Human Ecology Endowment Fund.

Ohio 4-H is the youth development program of Ohio State University Extension, the outreach arm of the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences. In 2022, more than 84,000 young Ohioans participated in 4-H clubs, groups, and special interest programs. Ohio has almost 15,000 active 4-H volunteers.

City announces traffic calming program

CHILLICOTHE - The City of Chillicothe is taking a comprehensive approach to slowing traffic and increasing safety ontarget neighborhood streets. Through a collaborative effort between the Chillicothe Police, Planning, and Service Departments, the City is looking to address recurring, dangerous speeding problems on S. Watt Street, Allen Avenue, Piatt Avenue, and Tritscheller Road in Yoctangee Park.

The program seeks to create a long-term solution that will reduce speeding and increase safety for allusers regardless of the mode of transportation.

"Neighborhood traffic concerns are among the most frequent calls that we get from community members, so I'm excited to see what this new approach will be able to accomplish,” said Luke Feeney, Mayor. “Over the past few years, we've found that collaboration between departments coupled with engagement with the community have resulted in the best outcomes and I'm hopeful that this project will be another example of that success."

The Traffic Calming Program will include utilizing speed signs, targeted traffic enforcement by Chillicothe Police Department, and pop-up traffic calming demonstrations. The project will enhance pedestrian and bicycle safety in neighborhoods and aim to increase road equity to all modes of transportation. OUC accepting applications for Community Health Worker Program

CHILLICOTHE -- Ohio University Chillicothe is accepting applications for the Community Health Worker Program for summer 2023. The free program will begin on August 22 in a hybrid model including both online and in-person classes.

Participants have the opportunity to become vital members of the health and wellness network of employers, instructors, and students living and working in Southeastern Ohio and beyond. Community Health Workers are vital to addressing health gaps and disparities. They are the frontline workers improving the quality of care people receive.

The program begins on May 15, 2023. This convenient hybrid model of online/in-person coursework is a great opportunity for community members to participate with only three in-person sessions on the OHIO Chillicothe campus plus 100 hours of classroom content. The 130 field hours begin once the classroom content is complete. Field hours are supervised, community-based hours required by the Ohio Board of nursing for licensure.

Meetings

The Southern Ohio Council of Governments (SOCOG) will hold its next board meeting on Thursday, April 13, 2023, at 10 a.m. at Riverside Branch of the Chillicothe & Ross County Public Library located at 550 Buckeye Street in Chillicothe.

The Colerain Township Board of Trustees will hold its regular monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, at the fire department annex building in Hallsville.

Liberty Township Board of Trustees will conduct a regular meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the office of the fiscal officer located at 4923 Vigo Road, Londonderry.
