Highway patrol conducts OVI Checkpoint on Rawson

FREMONT — The Fremont Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Sandusky County Sheriff’s Office and Fremont Police Department conducted an OVI checkpoint on Rawson Avenue.

The checkpoint ran 8-10 p.m.  July 22. The patrol reported 618 vehicles passed through the checkpoint and were checked for impairment.

One vehicle was diverted for further investigation. A total 17 officers from the Sandusky County Sheriff’s Office, Fremont Police Department and the Ohio State Highway Patrol worked the checkpoint. After the checkpoint, officers saturated Sandusky County in an effort to educate motorists about the dangers of drinking and driving.

Law enforcement officers stopped an additional 20 vehicles as part of saturation patrols. During the course of one traffic stop a probable cause search revealed illegal narcotics.

Board of election to meet Aug. 2

OAK HARBOR — The Ottawa County Board of Elections will be in special session Aug. 2 to conduct the August Special Election and address any business that comes before the board. The meeting will be held at the Board of Elections, 8444 W. Ohio 163, in the Veterans Memorial Building.

Voting on Election Day (Aug. 2) begins at 6:30 a.m. and ends at 7:30 p.m. at polling locations in Ottawa County.

Arts council plans 'Fall into Color' event

PORT CLINTON — Tickets are available for the Greater Port Clinton Area Arts Council's annual fall fundraiser.

"Fall Into Color" will be held 5-9 p.m. Sept. 10,  at The Arts Garage. The annual fundraiser features a Battle of the Artists, live art auction, silent auction, food and drinks and entertainment. Tickets are $50 each.

Wildlife Refuge to hold photo contest

OAK HARBOR — Visitors to federal public lands are invited to feature their best nature photos in the 2022 Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge Photo Contest.

Entries are being accepted on the Friends of Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge website through Sept. 6.

Categories include: Birds, Landscapes/ Plants, People Enjoying Nature, and Wildlife Other Than Birds. It is free to enter, and photographers may submit one photo per category. There are also three age groups: Youth (5-12 years), Teen (13-17 years) and Adult (18+).

All entries will be displayed on the Friends of Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge’s website. Winners will be included in a 2023 Public Lands Calendar. Prizes, including a free calendar will be awarded for the winning entries. The Best of Show will be featured in the Friends Annual Report and will include a private bus tour of the refuge for up to 14 people. Full contest rules are available at https://www.friendsofottawanwr.org/photography-contest.htm.
