News briefs: Local DAR chapter places wreaths at cemeteries

CHILLICOTHE― The Nathaniel Massie Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution placed 1,200 wreaths in local cemeteries on Dec. 17, as part of the National Wreaths Across America mission to Remember, Honor and Teach.

Each December wreath laying ceremonies take place at Arlington National Cemetery and 3,400 additional locations in all 50 states, at sea and abroad. The Nathaniel Massie Chapter placed wreaths in Greenlawn Cemetery and at Nathaniel Massie’s grave in Grandview Cemetery, additionally, wreaths were distributed to purchasers to place on veterans’ graves throughout the county.

The Nathaniel Massie Chapter of the DAR ranks ninth in the state of Ohio in top selling and laying of wreaths on the graves of our veterans. The goal is not to win a contest, but to honor as many veterans as possible. As each wreath is placed the veteran’s name is spoken with the intent that a name spoken aloud is not forgotten.

Over 50 community volunteers assisted the DAR ladies, including The Unioto Art Club and Young Patriots. Scout troops, 4-H Clubs and The Alvis House residents participated, as well as veterans, community members and Representative Mark Johnson.

A brief ceremony preceded the laying of the wreaths, conducted by Connie Meyer, state WAA chair person and past regent of Nathaniel Massie Chapter, with prayer led by, Mike Robinson, Chillicothe Veterans Administration Chaplain.

To participate in the 2023 wreath laying, purchase wreaths, or donate please contact Connie Meyer at ppcsmey2@gmail.com.
