News briefs: Public comment period open for Tar Hollow State Park culvert replacement

CHILLICOTHE – As part of the Ohio Department of Transportation—District 9’s Planning Department, the district’s Environmental Office is seeking public input for a project to replace a culvert on Tar Hollow Road in Ross County.

ROS-Tar Hollow Culvert FY 2024 (PID: 109380) - It is proposed to replace a culvert and headwalls on Tar Hollow Road to maintain access to the Group Camp area within Tar Hollow State Park. The project is located in a rural area of Colerain Township.

The existing culvert is a 48” corrugated metal pipe (CMP) with concrete headwalls. The new culvert will be a 60” concrete pipe.

The project will not require new right-of-way.

No homes or businesses will be removed by the project.

The roadway will be closed for the duration of the project. Construction will occur when the Group Camp area is closed.

The funding for the project is 100% from the state. The environmental commitment date is April 1. Public comment period open for Ohio and Paint Creek Recreational Trail culvert replacements

CHILLICOTHE – As part of the Ohio Department of Transportation—District 9’s Planning Department, the district’s Environmental Office is seeking public input for a project to replace a culvert on Ohio 138 in Ross County.

ROS-SR 138-10.98 (PID: 105103) - It is proposed to replace the culvert on Ohio 138 at the 10.98 mile mark in Ross County, Ohio. The project is located in a rural area of Concord Township, between Austin Road and Old U.S. 35. The project also includes the replacement of a culvert on Paint Creek Recreational Trail and the removal of a retaining wall along S.R. 138.

The existing culvert on Ohio 138 is a 30” corrugated metal pipe (CMP). The new culvert will be a 42” concrete pipe.

The project will require approximately 0.463 acres of permanent right-of-way. The permanent right-of-way is located along the stream channel, forested hillside and residential lawn.

The state detour will be Ohio 138 to U.S. 35 to Ohio 753 to Ohio 41 to Ohio 28 to Ohio 138. The state detour is approximately 26.0 miles.

Free income tax filing program starts Jan. 23

PIKE COUNTY - The Workforce & Business Development Program of the Community Action Committee of Pike County began the Free Tax Preparation Program on Monday.

This service is free for low-to-moderate-income taxpayers. Electronic filing with direct deposit means fast refunds, with no fees. Preparers are certified by the IRS to prepare and complete tax returns. 2022 Income Tax Returns will be accepted through our “Drop Off” process at Community Action Committee of Pike County at 941 Market Street, Piketon. Intake forms and envelopes are available in the Front Office and at the OhioMeansJobs Career Center entrance at 941 Market Street, Piketon.

These forms must be completed and submission of photo ID and proof of Social Security Numbers prior to having taxes prepared. Income Tax Returns will be accepted in the Front Office and in the OhioMeansJobs Career Center Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Huntington Township holds meeting

The Huntington Township Board of Trustees held its annual reorganization meeting on Jan. 10. Gary Hopkins was re-elected as president of the board; John Cottrill as the vice president, and Larry Kellough was appointed as the road crew supervisor. In addition, Cottrill will be the cemetery supervisor.

The Board of Trustee meetings will still be the at 5:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month at the Huntington Township Firehouse. The second monthly meeting on the last fourth Wednesday of each month at 7:30 has been ended.

The 2022 annual financial report is complete and available for review by calling the fiscal officer, Robin Snyder, at 740-775-1853.

Meetings

The Ross County Community Improvement Corporation has scheduled a special meeting to discuss the sale of real estate from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Jan. 27, at the Chamber of Commerce Conference Room, 45 E Main Street.
