News briefs: Ross County Historical Society announces Christmas Open House

CHILLICOTHE - The Ross County Historical Society invites the public to celebrate the holidays at its Christmas Open House Saturday, Dec. 10, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Ross County Heritage Center, 45 West Fifth Street.

Features will include a beautiful, one-of-a-kind Christmas tree decorated with hundreds of hand-cut paper ornaments--a traditional Pennsylvania German craft known as Scherenschnitte--by local artist Bonnie Grove; a charming Victorian Christmas parlor with late 19th & early 20th century holiday decorations and toys; and other exhibits including “Toys from the Attic,” and “Chillicothe’s Model Railroad.” The event will also present an opportunity to see our current exhibit in the McKell Library featuring early Ross County Samplers & Needlework from the historical society’s textile collections.

Enjoy traditional holiday atmosphere and browse the Museum Store for special holiday gifts including many books and other hard-to-find publications on local and regional history for those history buffs on your shopping list. Giftshop items featured this year will be many examples of Bonnie Grove’s Scherenschnitte Christmas ornaments and framed cuttings as well.

Admission is free, and everyone is welcome.

Fluor-BWXT 2023 Summer Internship Applications Available

Fluor-BWXT (FBP) is currently accepting internship applications for summer 2023. The FBP internship program provides college students from a wide range of educational programs the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in their chosen field of study.

Students interested in pursuing an internship at FBP must meet the following criteria:

• Students who are at least 18 years of age or older at the time they begin the program;• Must be eligible to work in the United States in accordance with Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Naturalization regulations;• Must be a full-time student pursuing an associate’s, bachelor’s or master’s degree and have completed a minimum of two semesters or three-quarters of academic coursework toward a specified degree relevant to Fluor-BWXT’s scope of work;• Must be enrolled in a participating four-year accredited college or university, OR be a permanent resident of either Jackson, Pike, Ross, or Scioto County while enrolled and pursuing a degree;• Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (Applicants must submit an official or unofficial copy of their current transcript when applying for the position. Adena adds four new providers

CHILLICOTHE – Adena Health System is expanding its care for patients with the addition of four health care providers, across multiple service lines. These incoming physicians and advanced practice providers are delivering even more options for comprehensive, close-to-home care for patients throughout the region.

Adena is pleased to welcome:

Claudia Call, Certified Nurse Practitioner is now caring for family medicine patients in Jackson and Wellston. Claudia brings over six years of nursing experience to the health system having cared for patients across Ohio and West Virginia. She earned her family nurse practitioner master’s degree from Marshall University in Huntington, WV.

Carissa Hines-Mitchell, Certified Nurse Practitioner returns to Adena caring for patients at the Adena Cancer Center in Chillicothe. Hines-Mitchell brings over five years of combined inpatient and outpatient oncology experience. She previously served as a registered nurse at the Adena Cancer Center from 2018-2021 and held float pool and volunteer positions with the health system.

Inam Khan, DO is accepting new patients at Adena Family Medicine – Circleville. A board-certified physician, he earned his medical degree from the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Athens. Dr. Khan completed his internal medicine residency at Summa Health System – Akron Campus.

Kyle Ott, MD is welcomed to the growing team of sports medicine providers with Adena Orthopedic and Spine Institute. Dr. Ott is accepting new patients in Washington Court House. A board-certified physician, he earned his medical degree from Wright State University. Dr. Ott completed his family medicine residency at Good Samaritan Hospital and sports medicine fellowship at the Kettering Sports Medicine Center, both in Dayton.

Women’s cancer screenings in Ross County

Through its Women’s Health Clinic, the Ohio University Heritage Community Clinic has long provided mobile women’s cancer screening clinics throughout southeastern Ohio as part of its mission to improve women’s health in the region.

In collaboration with Adena Health Systems, OU’s Women’s Health Clinic will offer same-day mammography at Adena Health Center Western Ave. 55 Centennial Blvd. Chillicothe from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 8.

Appointments are required and women should call 740-593-2432 or 1-800-844-2654 for an appointment.

Services offered include breast health education, PAP tests, breast and pelvic exams, and navigation through the continuum of care. Same-day mammography is available provided by Adena onsite. The Breast and Cervical Cancer Project (BCCP) will be available for no-cost breast and cervical cancer screenings and diagnostic testing to qualified women who meet eligibility criteria.
