News briefs: Two Lancaster City Schools teachers honored

LANCASTER - Lancaster City Schools announced that Kerri Rodenbaugh, elementary art teacher, and Jeff Wells, high school science teacher, were honored by the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation as part of the 2022 Teachers Honoring Teachers Program. Wells nominated Rodenbaugh for her commitment to deep learning and excellent teaching.

The award is given to an educator based on a nomination submitted by a peer. In this case, Wells nominated Rodenbaugh for her innovative teaching style, passion for learning, and student-centered approach. “Rodenbaugh encourages her young students to explore the art of the world, while simultaneously incorporating principles of science, technology, engineering, and math. Whether it be with 3D printers, pendulums, or producing digital media, Rodenbaugh exposes her students to how STEM and art are not mutually exclusive, but rather how "STEAM" (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) can be used to better understand how the world works,” Wells said.

The Martha Holden Jennings Foundation awarded Rodenbaugh $500 to be used to pursue excellence in her elementary school classrooms at Tarhe Trails, Mt. Pleasant and Gorsuch West. In addition, Wells received $500 to be used for learning activities in his Lancaster High School science classroom.

“Mr. Wells and Ms. Rodenbaugh are an example of mutual respect and support,” said Nathan Hale, superintendent of Lancaster City Schools. “It is wonderful to see two of our teachers honored for recognizing a peer’s contributions to our district. This is a clear demonstration of the high level of teamwork and commitment that benefits our students, our district and community.”
