Baby & Me Tobacco Free (Moms Quit for Two) Program available

CHILLICOTHE – The Ohio Department of Health has awarded Ross County Health District’s Children & Family Health Division a grant for the Baby & Me Tobacco Free (Moms Quit for Two) Program.

This is a smoking cessation program for pregnant women less than 36 weeks gestation who are current tobacco users or who have quit within 3 months of becoming pregnant. Through a series of face-to-face counseling sessions, women receive support and tools to successfully quit using tobacco products. Program participants receive vouchers for free diapers as rewards for their success.

The Baby & Me - Tobacco Free Program was recently designated a “Best Practice” by the Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs (AMCHP). Programs with this designation have been reviewed by experts in the public health field as proven effective.

Pregnant women who smoke have an extra motivation to quit – the health of their unborn child. Smoking during pregnancy can lead to low birthweights infants, and premature birth. In the longer term, maternal smoking during pregnancy is associated with a range of poor outcomes in children including ADHD, and cognitive dysfunction. Children who grow up in smoke-free homes enjoy many health benefits, so it is equally important to remain quit.

To date, over 18,000 women and their families across the United States have benefited from this program. Laurie Adams, President and Founder of the program, on learning of the designation states, “This “Best Practice” designation is further confirmation that investing in healthy children begins with offering tailored support to pregnant women and their families. Many pregnant women who smoke are consumed by guilt and wish they could quit. We offer a way for these women to realize their dream of being free from the grip of tobacco addiction, at a time when it matters most to not only their health, but the health of their unborn children.”

Meals on a Budget workshop on Oct. 20

PIKETON - The Workforce & Business Development Program (W&B) at the Community Action Committee of Pike County (CAC) will be hosting a Meals on a Budget Workshop that offers in-depth information on how to create a household grocery budget and develop meal plans to make the most of your food budget. During this no-cost workshop, attendees will receive tools, tips, and information on creating their own meal budget. In addition, the instructors will prepare a complementary low-cost dish for attendees to sample. The workshop will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20h at the OhioMeansJobs Career Center at 941 Market Street in Piketon.

“This workshop is an excellent opportunity to learn how to get the most out of your grocery budget,“ stated Erica Jones, co-instructor. “With today’s inflation, we understand how challenging it can be to prepare meals on smaller budgets, and this workshop will provide people with the knowledge of how to do that effectively.”

The workshop is made possible through the Financial Literacy Program which is a partnership between State Farm and the W&B. The focus of the Financial Literacy Program is to provide financial education services and Free Income Tax Preparation to the community.

Registration is required to attend this event and seats are limited. Please contact Kate Van Meter at (740) 289 – 2371 at extension 7013, or via email: cvanmeter@pikecac.org

Children’s Clothing Bank available

CHILLICOTHE - For over 40 years the First Presbyterian Church has run a children’s clothing bank for those in Ross County who are in need. The bank has been closed for the summer but is now open for the remainder of the school year.

Free clothes are provided for infants, toddlers, and school age children. Many of the clothes are donated and some are newly purchased throughout the year. Each child during each visit may get three outfits (a top and bottom), a pair of shoes and new underwear and new socks. Also available may be PJs and books. A visit may occur once every three months and the church keeps as many clothes on the shelf as possible in as many sizes as possible. Finally, each child may receive one winter coat per school year.

The parents may get the annual referral form from most Ross County churches and schools as well as Community Action and Integrated Services. If no referral is obtained in advance, a parent can complete one upon the first visit.

The clothing bank is located at the Chillicothe and Ross County Public Library Annex which can be found at 146 S. Paint Street behind the main library. The hours of operation is from 10 AM to 11:45 AM on TUESDAY’S and volunteers staff the clothing bank and are happy to help.

Donations made be dropped off at the church located at the corner of Bellview and Mead Dr. For additional information call the church at 740-774-4440.
