The News-Journal is refreshing its funny-page offerings: Here's what's new

After considerable time spent planning – along with survey results from loyal print readers – we are refreshing the comics at the Daytona Beach News-Journal.

We’ll still offer a robust array of comics. Plus you will find many new strips that are gaining in popularity across the U.S. and that offer storylines that more appropriately line up with daily life in 2024.

The new print lineup begins Monday, January 29.

The first question you may have, is do we lose any comics? Yes, but only a few. For daily comics, we will go from 34 to 33 strips. But we will have the same number of pages. For Sunday comics we go from 25 to 23, and we will lose a page, going from five pages to four.

You may also wonder, will I miss any of my favorites? That's possible. Some of the comics we run now will be replaced by others. But don't fret, they will still be available online by going to www.news-journalonline.com/comics.

So what's in the new funny pages? The new Monday through Saturday lineup includes a lot of favorites plus a lot of new entries.

The lineup looks like this: Blondie, Zits, Beetle Bailey, Family Circus, Hagar the Horrible, Dennis the Menace, Garfield, Peanuts, For Better or Worse, Baby Blues, Pickles, Pearls Before Swine, Jump Start, Ziggy, Marmaduke, Non-Sequitur, Crabgrass, Crankshaft, Luann, Baldo, Frank & Ernest, Born Loser, Close to Home, Argyle Sweater, Mother Goose, Rose is Rose, Wizard of Id, B.C., Hi & Lois, Mutts, Curtis, Shoe and The Lockhorns.

For the Sunday lineup, we'll have Blondie, Zits, Beetle Bailey, Family Circus, Hagar the Horrible, Dennis the Menace, Garfield, Peanuts, For Better or Worse, Baby Blues, Pickles, Foxtrot, Pearls Before Swine, Jump Start, Ziggy, Marmaduke, Non-Sequitur, Crabgrass, Crankshaft, Luann, Baldo, Frank & Ernest and Born Loser.

So which comics are going away? Eleven comics will be switched out of the Monday-through-Saturday lineup: Gasoline Alley, Big Nate, Middletons, Doonesbury, Snuffy Smith, Loose Parts, Brevity, Grizzwells, Heart of the City, Arlo and Janis and Reality Check.

A total of 13 comics will no longer appear in Sunday's funnies: Prince Valiant, Doonesbury, The Phantom, Hi and Lois, Curtis, Snuffy Smith, Tiger, Hocus Focus, Slylock Fox, Heathcliff, Shrimp and Grits, Brevity and Big Nate.

So why are we making these changes, you may ask?

Times change and our readers change too. As a trusted source of local news and content in communities nationwide, we continuously evaluate our content and how to serve our audiences best. Comics have historically evolved to reflect the culture and tastes of the times.

The change is affecting more than just the Daytona Beach News-Journal. All the newspapers in the USA TODAY Network will be implementing or have already implemented this new presentation.

We hope you enjoy the new lineup!
