Clean-up events

Community clean-up in Newcomerstown is May 6-7.

A bin will be made available at the Newcomerstown Emergency Rescue Squad grounds for items that can’t be recycled. Newcomerstown residents can enter from the State Street side and exit through to College Street on the north side of the grounds.

For community clean-up, the village will take almost anything but no tires, solvents (such as paint, oil, thinners, any liquids that are considered toxic). Also brush, tree branches or trees will not be accepted. Mattresses should be covered, for the workers safety from bugs. Appliances can be brought in. Furniture is allowed. Television sets are okay

Brush clean-up dates are May 20-23, June 17-20 and July 15-18. Bins will be placed at the NERS grounds, with residents entering from the north side of the facility.

The bins will accept grass clippings, trimmed brush like from hedges or small fallen branches. No trees, limbs, or whole bushes with their root ball because there is not enough space for them.

Tire drop-off

A tire drop-off event was held on Saturday, April 23, resulting in the quota of 2,500 tires being dropped off by 10 a.m., resulting in the event being ended earlier than anticipated.

Officials are seeking to add another tire drop-off event.

School notes

Newcomerstown schools offered a “Positive Social Media Challenge” to students in April.

Students were challenged to help pick up trash around the community and follow up with decorating sidewalks with chalk art.

Those taking part were asked to take pictures of the clean-up and the decorations, using the hashtag #NCTunplugged. The person who has the most trash picked up would receive a prize.

The Newcomerstown High School Senior English class was asked to create a project to benefit their class, school, and/or community.

For one of these student projects, students are looking for names of Newcomerstown High School graduates who are veterans or active military personnel. There is a Google Form available on the school website to fill out; use it as many times as needed.

The annual West School Track and Field Day at Lee Stadium will be Monday, May 23, with a rain date of May 24. Miss Lefler's class, second and third grades will be in the morning with fourth and fifth grades in the afternoon. Parents are invited to attend.

West School students recognized at a school Town Hall meeting included: Second grade - Cohen Truex, Kacee Adamik, Lane Hochstetler, Addison Little; Third grade - Dallice Lehman, Molly Hart, Kaden Metcalf, Braxton Stahl; Fourth grade - Lydia Schilling, Charlotte Foster, Bryson Stahl; Fifth grade - Kendall Redman, Makieya Thomas, Marshall Barker, Lillie Gillaspie; Miss Lefler - Leah Hughes.

The eighth grade graduation dance will be Saturday, May 21, at 7 p.m. The event for current Newcomerstown Middle School eighth grade students will be the following day after the eighth grade graduation ceremony on May 20.
