In the News: Trojan football program to celebrate milestone

NEWCOMERSTOWN — The Newcomerstown football program will be recognizing its 100th anniversary this season and is planning some special events for each of the home football games.

While the season kicks off, literally, with an away game against Shenandoah, the first home game will be Friday, Aug. 26, against Beallsville.

In recognition of the 100th year of football, all former cheerleaders, former players and coaches are invited to help celebrate the event. Former players and coaches will be admitted free of charge.

There will be a cheer practice from 6-8 p.m. on Aug. 24. There is a cost of $25 for a t-shirt, with proceeds to support the cheerleading program.

Themes for the remaining home football games include: Sept. 2 vs. Conotton Valley, Military Appreciation game; Sept. 9 vs. Sciotoville, Biddy Cheer game; Sept. 30 vs. Tuscarawas Central Catholic, Homecoming; Oct. 14 vs. Strasburg, Senior Night.

Job posting

The village of Newcomerstown posted the role and responsibilities towards selecting a new Chief of Police when Gary Holland retires from the position in January.

The job description posting reads: ‘We are looking for a diligent chief of police to oversee and supervise the activities of the patrol unit. To be a successful chief of police, you should work well independently, possess solid knowledge of local, state and federal laws and policies, and possess strong verbal and communication skills.”

The responsibilities of the chief of police include:

  • Conducting the planning and assignments of programs/police activities.

  • Preparing and maintaining records and reports.

  • Managing subordinates and investigations.

  • Developing policies and regulations.

  • Planning budgets for the Police Department.

Requirements to apply include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or a related field.

  • Extensive experience working in a police department.

  • Solid knowledge of police methods and practices.

  • Excellent knowledge of federal laws and regulations.

  • Outstanding public speaking abilities.

  • Analytical thinking abilities.

Patron Appreciation

The Newcomerstown Public Library is having a “Patron Appreciation Day” from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 24.

Patrons are invited to stop in for a walking taco and dessert and also enter for a chance to win some prizes.

Halloween Festival

Newcomerstown Now, a community promotional group,is planning a Halloween Festival on Saturday, Oct. 29, beginning at noon.

The event will include a costume contest, pumpkin painting, apple cider, magic show, haunted trail, cotton candy, balloon art, caramel apples, carnival games, “Caricatures by Greg” and food trucks.

Barbecue, car show

The Plainfield United Methodist Church, 101 Church St., Plainfield, will hold its annual carry-out chicken barbecue and “Shades of the Past Car Show” on Saturday, Aug. 27.

Car show registration is $10 per car and will begin at 3 p.m. The car show starts at 5 p.m. with awards at 7 p.m.

Serving begins at 4:30 p.m. with one-half chicken, potato salad, roll, brownie and beverage for $12. All dinners will be served as carry-out at the back of the church; there is no inside dining.
