In the News: Weather, crowds — all was right at the Cy Young Festival

The Early Literacy Summer Reading Group at the Newcomerstown Public Library had a visit from Heather Stein-Wells of the Newcomerstown Emergency Rescue Squad, who brought a fire truck to the library so members of the group could climb inside and try on gear. Library officials also gave thanks to two more donors: Dr. Richard Roe, Chiropractor's Office and Connolly, Hillyer, & Ong Law firm.

NEWCOMERSTOWN — Good weather and good crowds were all a part of the 2022 Cy Young Festival  in the village June 24-26.

Jadn Lindig was crowned queen of the 2022 festival by Rhylee Shepherd, the 2021 festival queen. Other members of the 2022-2023 Cy Young Court are: Little Slugger Attendant Luka Lawson, Little Slugger Creed Moore, Mini Queen Addi Wilson, Princess Attendant Peyton McGarvey, Princess Alliyah Moore, Junior Queen Attendant Gretchin Rolli, Junior Queen Madi Moore and Senior Queen Marlene Ross.

Corporate partners for the 2022 Cy Young Festival included Cleveland Clinic-Union Hospital and Wendy’s.

John Denny. Cy Young Award in 1983 while he was with the Philadelphia Phillies, was the guest of honor for the festival and Grand Marshal of the Dean Chance Memorial Parade on Saturday afternoon. Denny also presented awards to winners of the annual Cy Young Run and autographed three Louisville Slugger bats that were were auctioned off at a luncheon on Saturday.

Chris Hart, historian, presented “He Throws Like a Cyclone” at the Olde Main Street Museum on Friday evening.

Musical entertainment included Family Tradition (also known as The Dotson Brothers) on Friday and the Adam Calvert Band on Saturday evening. ARTSNCT presented The Domenic Greco Band on Saturday afternoon.

The final day of the festival included the Ron Porcher Vintage Baseball Game at Cy Young Park, a talent show, a pet show and a car show on Main Street. The car show was sponsored  by Dunning Motors of Cambridge and Chevrolet-Buick-GMC of Millersburg.

Swim Lessons

Swim lessons at Cy Young Park are being offered July 5, 11, 12, 13 and 18 for a cost of $50.

Contact Bre Taylor at 330-204-5471 for scheduling. Money for lessons will be accepted at the pool.

No goggles that cover the nose and no floatation devices are permitted.

Classes offered include:

Beginners: 5:30-6:30 p.m. for ages 5-7. Space for 30 children only.

Intermediate: 6:30-7:30 p.m. for ages 8-10. Space for 30 children only.

Gateway to Fall tickets

Representatives of the Gateway to Fall Festival will be on hand at the Second Saturday event on Main Street from 5-8 p.m. to sell tickets for the festival’s “Deal or No Deal” event, sponsorships and “duck adoptions” for the River Duck Derby. There will also be tickets for a pulled pork dinner available.

Brush clean-up

Brush clean-up dates in Newcomerstown are July 15-18. Bins will be placed at the Newcomerstown Emergency Rescue Squad grounds on College Street.

The bins will accept grass clippings, trimmed brush like from hedges or small fallen branches. No trees, limbs, or whole bushes with their root ball because there is no space for them.
