1 of 2 suspects charged with murder of 79-year-old man

HASTINGS, Mich. (WOOD) — One of two people accused in the murder of a 79-year-old man in rural Barry County last week has been formally charged.

Brady West, 29, was arraigned Monday, the Barry County prosecutor confirmed.

West and another suspect each face open murder charges as fourth-time habitual offenders in the May 29 death of Jimmy Sykes. It’s unclear when the second suspect may be arraigned.

Sykes, 79, of Battle Creek, was found dead in a driveway on Cloverdale Road west of North Avenue in rural Baltimore Township, southwest of the village of Nashville. The Barry County Sheriff’s Office has not released information about how he died, how detectives identified the suspects or how Sykes may have known them.

Online Michigan Department of Corrections records show West previously served time after pleading no contest to sexually assaulting a person between the ages of 13 and 15. He was discharged from MDOC’s custody in September 2022.
