14 Newly Identified Srebrenica Victims Buried on Anniversary of Massacre

A 17-year-old boy was among 14 newly identified victims of the Srebrenica massacre in Bosnia who were buried as thousands attended a 29th anniversary event at the Srebrenica Memorial Center on Thursday, on July 11, reports said.

The remains of 17-year-old Beriz Mujic, born in 1978, were exhumed last year and laid to rest next to his brother, Hazim, according to the Bosnian public broadcasting service BHRT. The oldest of the 14 newly identified victims was Hamed Salic, who was 68 years old when he disappeared in 1995, BHRT said.

On July 11, 1995, during the Bosnian War, Serb forces led by Ratko Mladic entered an area declared safe by the United Nations and killed more than 8,000 Bosniak Muslim men and boys in and around Srebrenica before dumping them in mass graves. The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) described the massacre as “the single worst atrocity of the war.” Credit: RFE/RL’s Balkan Service via Storyful
