15-year-old boy killed in Grand Crossing shooting, police say

A 15-year-old boy was killed in a shooting Wednesday in the Grand Crossing neighborhood on the city’s South Side, according to Chicago police.

Officers responding to a ShotSpotter alert found Phillip Mitchell with a gunshot wound in his head near the street in the 7100 block of South King Drive around 5:40 p.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Mitchell was transported to Comer Children’s Hospital, where he later died, police said.

Mitchell, a Grand Crossing resident, was pronounced dead at 6:13 p.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.

Police said they took a person of interest into custody, and that detectives are investigating. No charges were announced as of Thursday morning.
