A 16-year-old is in custody, accused of killing his brother in a stabbing at their apartment.

Mohamed Elzubeir was charged with first-degree murder on Tuesday. He is being charged as an adult in the stabbing death of his brother, 19-year-old Abdelmagid Elzubeir.

The incident occurred at about 10:15 a.m. Tuesday in an apartment building in the Oakridge Neighborhood in downtown Des Moines, according to a news release from police spokesperson Sgt. Paul Parizek. He was transported to UnityPoint Methodist Medical Center but died from his injuries.

Police later said Abdelmagid Elzubeir was stabbed in the neck and allege the incident was premeditated.

"(Abdelmagid) was a good boy," their father, Mutaz Elzubeir, said. "He was going to finish high school this year."

Elzubeir described his older son as being loved as much as he was loving. He said he was well-respected in Oakridge by kids and parents alike.

"He wanted to go to college in New York," Elzubeir said. "He wanted to be a doctor. He was such a good boy."
