18-year-old among multiple drownings reported by Grand River Dam Police

GRAND LAKE, Okla. (KFOR) — An 18-year-old man from Oklahoma City was recovered Friday evening after drowning.

On Friday July 5th, the Grand River Dam Authority responded to a report of drowning. When they got to the Locust Cove area, they found the body of an 18-year-old man.

Police said he jumped off the dock’s roof and did not come backup to the surface.

His body was found over 30ft down.

“It is a big deal,” said Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Ryan Griffith.

According to the OHP, a Tulsa man and a 14-year-old drowned at Lake Keystone in Pawnee County.

Meanwhile at Lake Thunderbird, a Harrah man was making repairs to his boat when he unexpectedly fell overboard.

Plus, the Grand River Dam Police said an Afton man also drowned near the Patricia Island of the lake, all of this on the 4th of July.

“Every one of these drownings was avoidable,” said Griffith.

There were also two other drownings reported over the last few days. One in Tishomingo, the other at a water park in Colcord.

Troopers said those going to lakes should be prepared by wearing a life jacket and knowing the area of water.

“Trying to put a personal flotation device on in the water, it’s probably comparable to trying to put a seatbelt on in a car crash,” said Griffith.

Friends of the teenager from Oklahoma City have been sharing their sadness with this loss.

However, law enforcement has yet to identify him.
