18-year-old from Belleville among those arrested with firearms in downtown St. Louis

An 18-year-old from Belleville was one of two young men arrested with firearms early Saturday morning in downtown St. Louis.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department said its officers responded to the area of North 8th and Chestnut streets around 4:30 a.m. after getting calls about “several juveniles and young adults impeding traffic and brandishing firearms.”

Officers seized two firearms from the 18-year-old man and a 19-year-old man from Florissant and arrested them, according to a statement from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department on Saturday morning. The statement did not indicate whether they have been charged.

A 17-year-old boy was also present with an airsoft gun, according to police. The police said his mother responded to the scene and took custody of him.

The identities of the juvenile and young adults were not released.

“We continue to see the downtown area serve as a gathering spot for people who only want to create problems,” the police department wrote in the statement. “... Parents and guardians need to have conversations with kids in their care. Carrying firearms and/or airsoft guns are dangerous and could be deadly.”
