An 18-year-old motorcyclist was killed Thursday in a head-on crash in the Steuben County town of Wayland, according to New York State Police.

Wayland-based troopers said the crash happened on state Route 63, with a preliminary investigation determining a southbound 2007 Chappy Yamaha motorcycle passed an uninvolved vehicle in a no-passing zone before striking a northbound 2015 Kia Sorento head-on, ejecting the bike's driver.

Police said the male motorcycle operator was pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers did not release the identity of the motorcycle driver but in a statement, Alfred State College President Steve Mauro identified him as Ryder Whitman, a first-year Heavy Equipment Operations student from Dansville.

Mauro expressed "great sadness" and "heartfelt condolences," adding the "Pioneer family is here for you during this time of sorrow."

Mauro told the college community that Alfred State health and wellness services are being made available on both the Alfred and Wellsville campuses. For student counseling, call 607-587-4200.

Officials said the crash occurred at about 7:30 p.m.
