$1M Mega Millions ticket sold in Connecticut

DERBY, Conn. (WTNH) — One lucky lottery player hit it big Tuesday night.

Someone bought a Mega Millions ticket at the Mobil station on Pershing Drive in Derby. Now, the store is going to have to put up a new “winning ticket” sign with the amount of $1 million.

“I wish it was me. I wish it was me,” repeated Naugatuck resident Kenneth Redding. “I wish them the best of luck with the money.”

One million dollars is the prize when you get everything but the Mega ball right.

“I guess it’s very rare,” said Stacy Mraz, who works overnights at the Mobil. “The boss has told me that he’s only sold one other one in any of his stores and that was over 25 years ago.”

How late can you buy Powerball tickets in Connecticut?

It’s not just the lucky winner who gets something out of this. Just for selling the winning ticket, the store gets $10,000 from the Connecticut Lottery. That’s welcome news for the store, but so is knowing one of their customers just got rich.

“We’re just kind of waiting now to see who it was. Hopefully it’s one of our regulars,” Mraz said.

“I wish it was me yesterday, that’s for sure, but there’s always a chance every day, right?” said Mike Morin as he shopped at the convenience store Wednesday.

Does he think the Mobil is lucky now? “I think so. I’m going to play a little bit more, I think,” he said.

Who won the $1.13 billion Mega Millions jackpot? Why we may never know

That is the hope- that the big winner brings in a big crowd of new customers.

“People are very superstitious when they see big tickets come our of a store,” Mraz said. “People ask all the time. that’s why we keep the little boards up. And they ask us, what’s the highest winner you’ve had? They like that. Everybody’s looking for the big payout.”

And they are looking to add more big “winning ticket” signs to Connecticut’s smallest city.
