2 intersections on 15th Street to close for weeks during RTD rail project

DENVER (KDVR) — Heads up, Denver drivers: Two new intersection closures were implemented Monday for RTD’s downtown rail reconstruction project.

The Regional Transportation District began working on 15th Street at Stout and California streets on July 15. The agency anticipates this portion of the project will last about three weeks, which would put its conclusion in early August.

To help keep commuters on time to their destinations, RTD is operating its free MallRide service between Denver Union Station and Champa Street, temporarily suspending the service between Curtis Street and Civic Center Station until the rail reconstruction work is completed in September.

Customers needing a connection to Civic Center Station beyond Curtis Street can use the Free MetroRide service as an alternative service in Denver’s Central Business District. The Free MetroRide service began in May as a support for the Downtown Rail Reconstruction service, according to RTD.

The MetroRide operates on 18th and 19th streets between Civic Center and Union Station with a 10-minute frequency between 5:45 a.m. and 7 p.m. every day of the week.

After the 15th Street intersections at California and Stout are reconstructed, RTD’s contractors will move to 17th Street and reconstruct that road’s intersections with California and Stout. The work on 17th Street is also anticipated to last three weeks.

RTD has already completed the reconstruction of Broadway and Welton, which was one of the five intersections named in the downtown rail reconstruction project.

RTD has been touting the reconstruction as the first of its kind in the agency’s history. Downtown rail service commenced in October 1994, according to RTD, connecting 30th and Downing to Interstate 25.
