2 men arrested in connection with Short North mass shooting that injured 10

Two men have been arrested and charged in connection with the Short North mass shooting in June that injured 10, though neither were charged with actually shooting during the incident.

Rondell Sharif Mallory, 22, of Columbus, and Gabriel David Michael Hunter, 19, of Lancaster, each face separate charges following the overnight shooting that rocked the Short North Arts District, according to Franklin County Municipal Court records. Each is being held on a $200,000 cash bond, arraignment records show.

The shooting happened about 2:30 a.m., June 23 in the 1100 block of North High Street near East 3rd Avenue, according to police. Ten victims of the late June shooting, including two juveniles, were all expected to survive, police said at the time.

Mallory was charged with one count of tampering with evidence, court records show.

Mallory suffered a gunshot wound to the leg, according to a Columbus police affidavit. After further investigation of the shooting, Columbus police determined that Mallory could be seen on video pointing a firearm at others who were involved, a police affidavit shows.

By the time police located Mallory, he had gotten rid of the gun he was seen holding on video during the shooting to prevent police from discovering it.

Hunter was also injured during the June 23 Short North shooting. He has been charged with felonious assault for an incident from two days prior to the Short North mass shooting, according to court records.

That prior shooting occurred around 10:57 a.m. June 21 in the 200 block of South Eureka Avenue.

Upon their arrival officers found Victor McGarity Jr. who was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his lower extremities. He transported to a local area hospital in stable condition, according to police.

A witness to the June 21 shooting told police that she was sitting in the front room of the home on South Eureka Avenue when she heard gunshots and saw a man holding a firearm run through the house and out the front door. She identified that man as Hunter, according to police.

After the June 21 shooting, Hunter jumped into a black four door Chevy Cruz that was caught on a license plate reading camera as it fled the scene.

After Hunter was injured in the June 23 Short North shooting, police showed McGarity a lineup of photos and he identified Hunter.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
