2-year-old thrown from car in St. Petersburg DUI crash, police say

A 2-year-old was sent to the hospital after being thrown from a car seat in a Friday night crash in St. Petersburg.

Police said the car’s driver was impaired.

Krista Carver, 33, of Pinellas Park, was driving her Kia SUV southbound on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street S at 11:30 p.m., according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.

The car, which did not have its headlights on, was swerving in its lane near the street’s 4200 block, police said. It veered into the street’s oncoming traffic lanes, then crashed into a tree on the 4400 block.

The 2-year-old, who wasn’t correctly buckled into their car seat, was ejected from the car in the crash, police said.

The child was taken to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. Police say their injuries were serious but not life threatening.

Carver, the driver, was arrested. Prosecutors are charging her with a series of alleged offenses, including child neglect, driving under the influence causing serious bodily injury and possession of cocaine, court records show.
