Missing boaters found deceased Monday afternoon

BARAGA/HOUGHTON COUNTIES, Mich. (WJMN) – The Michigan State Police, Marine Services Unit says the capsized boat and both missing people involved with the search were found Monday afternoon.

The victims were deceased and located in an area nearly 220 feet in depth in Lake Superior. The families have been notified however no names will be released.

MONDAY MORNING UPDATE: The search continues on Monday as two people remain missing after a vessel capsized in Lake Superior Saturday afternoon.

UPDATE: Just after 7:30 a.m. Monday, authorities provided an update on the search efforts. According to Michigan State Police (MSP), their Marine Services Unit with help from the United States Coast Guard, and area Sheriff’s departments will continue looking for the two missing people.

Efforts on Sunday to search the Second Sand Beach area of Lake Superior returned finding some debris. The capsized boat and two missing people still have not been located.

ORIGINAL: According to a release from the MSP, around 12:15 p.m. on June 8 troopers from the MSP Calumet Post along with deputies from the Houghton and Baraga County Sheriff’s Departments were dispatched to an area off of Second Sand Beach for a capsized 21-foot boat. It was reported that five people were on the boat at the time it sank. A person in another boat near the area responded to the scene and was able to rescue three of the five people.

As of 8:30 p.m. on June 8, the boat had not been located and two people remain missing. The Coast Guard responded with a helicopter from Traverse City and a boat from Coast Guard Station Portage. MSP’s Marine Services Unit is also responding to the scene to assist. No names will be released at this time, and this remains an active scene.
