20-Year-Old Helps Save Toddler Found Wandering Road Late at Night: ‘Hopefully, I Made a Difference’

“He doesn’t call himself a hero, but he is,” the man's cousin said

A 20-year-old South Carolina man reportedly saved a toddler from wandering down a road early on Sunday, June 16, after coming across the child while driving home from work.

According to local TV station WBTW, Camryn Davis called 911 around 1 a.m. local time after he stopped to check on the toddler.

“At first, I didn’t know what it was,” Davis told the outlet. “As I got closer, I realized it was a child.”

Davis said he was driving home from work with a friend when he recognized the young boy alone in the street — reportedly heading toward oncoming traffic. Davis happened upon the child, "slammed" on his brakes and threw on his hazard lights, he said.

“Then I rolled my window down [and said], ‘Hey, where’s your parents?’ ” Davis told local outlet WMBF.

The 20-year-old said he told Horry County Police that he tried to wave down several cars for help while he called 911.

WMBF reports that when officers arrived at the scene, they found the toddler wearing only a diaper. The child was returned safely to his parents a few blocks away from where Davis found him. 

The mother reportedly told police her young son wandered off outside the home after she fell asleep next to him, according to WBTW and WMBF.

“I like to think, you know, hopefully, I made a difference in someone else’s day,” Davis told the WBTW.

Davis’ family members said his actions were heroic.

“He doesn’t call himself a hero, but he is,” his cousin Connor Lieberz told WMBF.

Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment from PEOPLE.
