Day four of the Paris 2024 Olympics is underway as Simone Biles leads the US women’s gymnastics team to a gold medal win this afternoon.

This year’s competition comes after the team scored all silver at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics. Biles competed in the all-around, vault, floor and beam, while team member Suni Lee fought for the win in the all-around, beam and bars.

This marks the fourth gold medal the team has won in the last 32 years. Biles is now the most decorated American Olympic gymnast with eight medals. This accomplishment follows her emotional decision to withdraw from the Tokyo team event three years ago after developing the “twisties,” which left her unable to complete the twists needed for her routine.

The US women’s team clinched gold after US men’s gymnastics team won their first medal since 2008 on Monday. Their victory came after a stunning pommel horse routine from specialist Stephen Nedoroscik.

Katie Ledecky also competed in the 1,500-meter freestyle swimming race this afternoon, winning by nearly 18 seconds and advancing to the finals.

Meanwhile, Coco Gauff is out of the singles competition after she lost to Croatia’s Donna Vekic this morning in the third round.

Simone Biles wins Olympic gold with a little help from her friends as USA dominate team final

22:05 , Mike Jones

The all-around team final is a wild circus of a night with flips and spins and falls in all directions, and you need four eyes to watch. But at 8.20pm there was only one routine left to perform, and the room belonged to Simone Biles.

She performed with spring and extraordinary height, the highlight of which was a triple twisting double-back somersault which is hard enough to write, let alone deliver in an Olympic final. The routine contained some flaws on landing but it is a measure of her otherworldly skill that her score of 14.666 was still the best all night by a distance. She sealed gold with a kiss and the Bercy Arena erupted.

Team GB’s dream team strike fabulous relay gold at Paris Olympics

21:53 , Mike Jones

Team GB finally have a moment and a gold in the pool. It’s back-to-back Olympic titles for the dream team and this wonderful quarter can savour another dominant 4x200m freestyle victory. They led after each leg, defying any lingering doubts from so many close calls in individual events in Paris so far.

The ever-dependable James Guy did his job, Tom Dean followed and Matthew Richards brushed off a any disappointment from the 100m freestyle earlier in the evening. Then Duncan Scott, who has a seventh Olympic medal, did what he does best. He would not be denied, coming home in 6mins 59.43secs.

Stronger together, they had too much for the United States, who took silver, and Australia, who settled for bronze in an engrossing relay at La Defense Arena.

He’s fourth after the first 100m and is a second quicker than this morning’s heats. Corbeau from the Netherlands turns for home in first place but here comes the champion.

Daniel Wiffen spoke to BBC TV after winning gold for Team Ireland in the men’s 800m freestyle. He said: “I was writing, ‘I’m going into the history books.’ And that’s exactly what I have done.

“It definitely was [a perfect race] in the way I wanted to execute it. It wasn’t the time that I wanted but you know Olympic finals aren’t about getting the time, it is about getting your hand on the wall first.

“I haven’t seen Andy [his coach], he is somewhere in the building. I’ve got no idea but I’m sure I will see him on that top podium later on.

“I actually heard Nathan [his twin brother] when I was walking out and I thought ‘I can’t believe you have shouted that.’ He was the only person I could hear in the crowd which is pretty ironic, my twin is all I hear.”

Huske touches down in fourth with Australia’s Mollie O’Callaghan winning with a time of 52.75.

Anna Hopkin won’t be in the final.

Anna Hopkin sits in third at the turn in her semi-final race but she’s slowing down over the final 50m and finishes sixth in the race. It’ll be a tough ask for her to get through now.

Siobhan Bernadette Haughey set the pace with a fine 52.64 secs with Hopkin one second further behind at 53.74. She’ll need the second semi-final to swim slower in order to make it through.

Olympics 2024: Swimming - Men’s 800m freestyle - Wiffin wins gold for Ireland!

20:20 , Jack Rathborn

Goodness me, what a swim, he found something within 20m of the wall, Wiffin lifts himself up, he’s done it. He gestures, putting the phone down and sinks into the water.

Wiffin makes history for Northern Ireland, a first gold in 36 years, he takes an Olympics record for good measure, coming home in 7:38.19!

Bobby Finke won silver for the USA and Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri has a bronze.

Olympics 2024: Swimming - Men’s 800m freestyle

20:15 , Jack Rathborn

Daniel Wiffen bids to make history for Ireland, can he snap a 36-year wait for an athlete from Northern Ireland to win an Olympic gold medal.

The 23-year-old is off to a fine start, and he’s pipped Winnington, of the USA, at the half-way point.

But Finke is right there, as is Paltrinieri, who has pushed on too. This could be a razor-tight finish. That trio now pulling clear.

It’s Wiffin, Finke and Paltrinieri, all within a few tenths of a second as we approach the final 100m. The noise rises, the distance allows for the tension to rise, and we’ve got two lengths left.

The Italian leads by 0.78, to Wiffin... Can the Northern Irishman pull this back?

They’re so close to each other, most here are on their feet, 50m to go, three men, barely separated, 20m to go, it’s going to be Wiffin!

That was sensational, Kaylee McKeown has done it, in 57.33, a new Olympic record!

The Aussie goes back-to-back, edging out USA duo Smith and Berkoff, for silver and bronze. And don’t the Aussies love it, including Lleyton Hewitt and Alex De Minaur in the crowd.

Smooth, crisp strokes, it was a close race until the turn and then she powered clear, next up is the men’s 800m freestyle.

An icon! Leon Marchand with another stunning swim, he wins the first semi-final, 1min 53.40secs, beating out Canada's Ilya Kharun and Estonia's Kregor Zirk - who lands a national record.

But what noise, the hosts are glued to Marchand and every time he enters the pool, the pressure is immense.

Off Marchand dashes, to the pool to cool down, he’ll need to flush out lactic acid from his body ahead of that daunting double - he’s back for the men’s 200m breaststroke later on, due to start at 8:59pm BST.

Team GB’s Alice Kinsella spoke to BBC One after placing fourth in the women’s team final. She said: “I am so proud of this team. We gave it our all tonight and we thought we did it - I am super proud of the girls.

“It was the most nervous I have been [ahead of her balance beam performance] I kept my cool and yes I missed my first connection, but the rest of it I couldn’t do much more. “

An electric atmosphere at La Defense Arena, Maxime Grousset was showered with love as he came out.

He grabs third in the first semi-final, with Australia’s Kyle Chalmers winning, it’s bad news for Matt Richards though, he ties up in the final 25m or so, finishing sixth and he will not advance. Time to rest up for the 4x200m freestyle later!

The second semi-final is won by Pan, what a response to a sluggish heat! Chinese fans screech in delight above the media tribune, their man is fastest in the semi-finals. Popovici second and Jack Alexy third, in what was a quicker race. Five men under 48secs.

Team USA took their foot off the gas towards the end of that final and still dominated.

They scored exactly one point less than they did in qualification where they’re allowed to have four gymnasts compete and then drop the lowest score.

The difficulty of their routines is so high other teams have to hope they wipe out multiple times to have a realistic chance of keeping up with them.

Jordan Chiles fell as she started her balance beam routine and that was the lowest score the USA posted – a 12.733. Only two others Suni Lee’s and Chiles’ floor routines scored less than 14.

That is crazy.

Here are the full results for the women’s team gymnastics final. Team GB missed out on a medal by 0.262 points. That’s a bit heart-breaking and fourth place is the worst position to finish.

Full results:

  1. USA 🥇 171.268

  2. Italy 🥈 165.494

  3. Brazil 🥉 164.497

  4. Great Britain 164.235

Oh no! Alice Kinsella needed to score a huge 13.834 with her balance beam routine. She nails it to be honest, it’s one of the hardest apparatus and her score ends up at 13.600.

Team GB slip out of the medal places.

Simone Biles’ floor routine is a huge 14.666! Team USA win the gold!

Olympics 2024: Women’s gymnastics final

19:22 , Mike Jones

So, for the gold. Here comes Simone Biles on the floor.

She’s free, she’s loose, she’s having fun. It’s a high tempo start with plenty of backflips that Biles lands well.

But, she slips out of the area on her third run and that’ll be a deduction. The difficulty is so high but she won’t care. The routine had a few errors but nothing to hurt Team USA’s chances of winning gold.

Those tumbles were insane. A great way to finish.

Olympics 2024: Women’s gymnastics final

Canada, Japan and China have all finished their rotatations with none of the countries able to get ahead of Brazil. Romania are probably too far back to medal with Italy challenging for a silver and Team GB for bronze.

Team USA will ride off into the sunset and finish things off with Simone Biles’ floor routine that should guarantee them the gold.

Olympics 2024: Women’s gymnastics final

Brazil have finished their rotations with a final score of 164.497. Team GB are up against it and will need an insane score from Alice Kinsella on the beam to clinch bronze.

Jordan Chiles’ score 13.966 is the highest on the floor in this rotation. Deservedly so.

Olympics 2024: Women’s gymnastics final

19:12 , Mike Jones

Over to the floor again and Team USA’s Jordan Chiles is up. She looks super focused and for good reason. A great performance from the American sees her shake off the error from the balance beam and she gets the crowd going once again.

Becky Downie’s balance beam score is 12.933 after a 4.800 difficulty. This women’s team final is going to come down to the wire.

Olympics 2024: Women’s gymnastics final

19:08 , Mike Jones

Becky Downie nailed her uneven bars routine and needs to perform on the balance beam. Her mount is good and cartwheel flick is secure.

Team GB seem to be playing it safe on the beam and there’s a wobble from Downie which she manages to hold. A side somersault is good before a cartwheel with a one-and-a-half twist dismount lands strongly.

Two routines down. Downie should get a pretty good score for that even if the difficutly wasn’t too high.

Brazil’s Flavia Saravia fizzes through her own vault routine and it’s a good one. A score of 13.900 puts pressure on Team GB ahead of the next balance beam routine.

This is going to be close for the silver and bronze medals.

Suni Lee’s score from the floor is a very fine 13.533.

Olympics 2024: Women’s gymnastics final

Elsewhere, Canada’s first effort on the uneven bars posted 13.500 with Brazil scoring 13.366 on vault. Has Georgia-Mae Fenton beaten those scores? Yes! It’s a 13.566.

Alice Kinsella and Becky Downie to come for Team GB.

Meanwhile, Suni Lee is up on the floor for Team USA, smiling away and having a great time. Her enthusiasm is matched by a superb routine and a loud roar from the American fans.

Effortless. USA are charging to gold!

Olympics 2024: Women’s gymnastics final

18:57 , Mike Jones

Here’s Georgia-Mae Fenton. She starts off well but wobbles after a double spin. A cartwheel becomes a flick as she finds her rhythm.

There are a few nerves but a solid triple wolf turn keeps her on track. Can she dismount?

It’s a double back somersault and she sticks the landing! Decent.

Olympics 2024: Women’s gymnastics final

18:55 , Mike Jones

China and Brazil are finishing their rotations on the vault which has been a high scoring apparatus for both nations. Team GB are on the balance beam, their lowest scoring apparatus.

If they can nail their routines there’s a chance they can still medal but they’ll need to cut out any mistakes.

One more rotation to come, USA have a lead of almost five points but Team GB are into third place!

However, they’ve got the balance beam to come which has caused serious problems tonight. Here’s the standings with one rotation to go:

  1. USA - 129.131

  2. Italy - 125.529

  3. Great Britain - 124.164

  4. Canada - 122.632

  5. China - 122.132

  6. Brazil - 122.131

There’s no time to breathe in this rotation as Simone Biles leaps up onto the beam kicking off with a triple wolf turn. There’s a small wobble from the American great but nothing major.

Suni Lee’s score on the beam was a massive 14.600.

Over on the uneven bars, Team GB’s Becky Downie is up. She’s an expert on this apparatus and will need to perform well to give Britain a chance at a medal.

And boy does she! Switching superbly through the bars, twists, spins and a perfect landing. That’s got to be a good score...

Olympics 2024: Women’s gymnastics final

18:34 , Mike Jones

I don’t think there’s been a bigger smile than Suni Lee’s right now. Following Jordan Chiles’ balance beam routine, Lee steps up and produces the best routine of the day.

At least from what I’ve seen. Quick, skillful and perfectly poised, Lee puts Team USA back in control of this final with Simone Biles still to come.

Olympics 2024: Women’s gymnastics final

18:29 , Mike Jones

Steady composure may be Team GB’s way to a medal here. They’re up on the uneven bars and Alice Kinsella starts off with a solid 13.300.

If the gymnasts can avoid any mistakes here and on the balance beam they may be in with a chance. That’s a big ask though.

Olympics 2024: Women’s gymnastics final

18:27 , Mike Jones

The balance beam continues to take victims. Jordan Chiles, one of Team USA’s stars, hops onto it and immediately falls off!

Well, not immediately but she wasn’t performing any difficult moves and just slipped. That’ll be a one point deduction which brings the final alive again for those hoping to contest the gold.

Chiles scores a 12.733. Big mistake but it shouldn’t cost the USA much, they’ve got points in the bank after the first two apparatus.

Near the halfway stage, Team USA are leading comfortably by three points and, for a brief moment, Great Britain hit third before China finished off their balance beam runs and took the bronze medal position.

Team GB have a couple of tricky apparatus to come so it’ll be a tough ask for them to medal from here. Here are the standings:

  • 87.432 - USA

  • -3.102 - Italy

  • -3.966 - China

  • -5.501 - Great Britain

A 14.566! with an execution score of 8.266. Incredible.

Team GB have an okay time on the vault but they’re going to struggle to get up to the medal spots.

The Brazilian and Chinese gymnasts have really struggled on the balance beam. Flavia Seraiva wobbles a few times but gets through without too much trouble.

It’s very evident when Simone Biles is up. The crowd just goes wild. The uneven bars are one of her weakest events. Yet, she’s so quick and full of power.

A double twisting back somersault off the high bar leads to her landing which is great. Another decent score incoming here...

... 14.400. She’ll be very pleased to get it done.

The first USA gymnast we’re seeing in this rotation is Jordan Chiles. She’s up on the uneven bars looking to push home the team’s advantage after the vault.

She’s an incredible gymnast who just so happens to be on the same team as the greatest of all time. Her routine is full of spins, switches and a fine dismount.

It scores a 14.366, up a tenth from her qualifying score.

Team GB, who are currently seventh after the first rotation, are up on the vault next which tends to be one of the easier apparatus. If they can score big here they’ll put themselves in contention for the medal spots going forward.

The Independent’s Lawrence Ostlere reporting from the Bercy Arena:

“These are still early days here at the Bercy Arena, but already the US team look in the mood to dominate. They are top of the pile after the first rotation, after Simone Biles and Jade Carey both put down big scores on the vault.

“This arena fell totally silent as Biles paused at the top of the runway ready to perform, and she set off the loudest cheer of the night so far when she made it stick.

“A largely American crowd chanted “USA!” as she walked around the arena to their next apparatus, the uneven bars.”

It is not enough — it has never been enough — for Simone Biles to do gymnastics.

The 27-year-old American star has been intent almost from the start on pushing the sport in new directions by doing things that have never been done before. That could continue this week when she tries for her eighth Olympic medal in Paris.

Five elements currently bear her name in the Code of Points after she successfully completed them in an international competition: two on vault, two on floor exercise and one on balance beam.

Brazil are perhaps Team USA’s biggest competitiors in this Women’s team final. Rebeca Andrade has taken her turn on the uneven bars and smashes her routine with the slightest of hops on landing.

A score of 14.533 is higher than anyone else on the bars in this rotation – including all three Chinese gymnasts.

Fellow Brazilian Flavia Saraiva competed with a big bandage on her head after a fall in the warmup. She has a bigger hop on landing and she scores a 13.666.

Oh my days, that is good.

Simone Biles receives the biggest cheer from the crowd as she steps up to the start of her vault run. Biles performs the same twisting half-turn, one and a half twists routine as Jade Carey.

She lands it with a small hop but this will be a good score too.

Twisties, trials and tribulations: The biggest revelations from Simone Biles’ new documentary

17:34 , Mike Jones

Just under Simone Biles’ left collarbone, the Maya Angelou quote, “And Still I Rise” is permanently tattooed – etched into her body and mind. For the six-time World all-around champion and Olympic gold medalist, who is set to compete at the 2024 Paris Olympics after her shocking withdrawal from the 2020 Tokyo games, this sentiment rings truer now than ever before.

Feelings of doubt and depression left the 27-year-old, often recognized as the “greatest athlete of all time,” in and out of the gym for a year and a half before her comeback at this year’s Olympics was confirmed. Now, ahead of the anticipated summer competition, Netflix is shining a light on the most talked about gymnast, taking a deep dive into the last four years and beyond with its docuseries, Simone Biles: Rising.

Over on the vault, the stage for Team USA and Italy, Manila Esposito kicks off Italy’s rotation with a super score of 14.166.

In response there is a roar of cheers for Jade Carey who is superb and nails a 14.800 score. Team USA’s Jordan Chiles is also good in the air and lands with a little bounce.

Her score of 14.400 is a slight improvement on what she did in qualifying.

They’re setting the standard already.

Team GB’s Ruby Evans is the first gymnast up for this final. She’s on floor and after a very slight stumble, which she recovers well, following her first twirls the Brit gets into the routine.

She finishes with a double straight flourish and scores a 13.100. Very decent start.

There’s a loud cheer, the loudest of the night, as Team USA make their way onto the floor. Simone Biles has a wide smile on her face and is enjoying the adulation.

Based on the receptions alone the USA would already have the gold.

But, this is a final and anything can happen. All the teammates need to rise to the occasion and the field is a stacked house with the USA, Brazil and China the favourites ahead of this team final getting started.

Olympics 2024: Lee Morton goes from searching a job portal to Team GB Olympic hockey hero

16:32 , Luke Baker

Olympic days like these were never meant to happen to Lee Morton.

The Glaswegian lost his place as a full-time hockey player on the GB programme in 2019 and was a few clicks on a job portal away from quitting the sport altogether.

Thanks to an olive branch from head coach Paul Revington, a willingness to evolve his game and a whole heap of natural ability, Morton is now the toast of Team GB having struck a stunning brace in the final five minutes to earn a dramatic 2-2 draw with Netherlands.

Olympics 2024: Jack Draper complains about drinking hot water and having to fill his own bottle

16:10 , Luke Baker

Jack Draper crashed out of the men’s singles tennis earlier today by losing 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 to Taylor Fritz and the Brit wasn’t happy about the conditions at Roland Garros.

The temperature of the water and having to fill his own bottle were among the complaints in the sweltering Parisian heat.

“It was tough conditions, there’s no doubt about it,” said Draper as he dripped with sweat. “I need to play more in this sort of heat, and obviously, going to America, I’ll get more used to that. It was really hot out there today.

“We were both trying our best to put out some good tennis. Part of it’s physicality but I said to the referee, it’s pretty poor that the players have to drink hot water when we’re playing in those conditions.

“It’s important we have good fridges to keep our water cool. It’s so tough to recover when you’re just not replenishing properly.

“There’s no escape from the heat, even at the change of ends. I haven’t played in much hotter conditions than that. Your body starts to really fight against you.

“We shouldn’t have to fill our water up every change of ends, we need to sit down. It’s not good enough. I just think it’s pretty poor that they put the players through that on court.”

Olympics 2024 - Shooting: Nathan Hales reacts to glorious gold medal

16:05 , Jack Rathborn

Great Britain’s Nathan Hales has set a new Olympic record after winning gold in the men’s trap final.

“So many emotions; I’m very emotional as you can probably see,” Hales said after hitting 48 targets out of a possible 50. “It’s just an amazing result. There’s going to be a big celebration.

“The final was great and I'm so happy to get an Olympic record as well as winning the Olympics. I just try and keep everything as we always do and treat it exactly the same way I treat finals in training. I just push through and keep focused on what I'm doing, not on what other athletes are doing.

"Absolutely amazing to be on BBC, I'm so happy people at home could experience it. I knew I had a couple of targets buffer so that was a great comfort but I try not to think about that and it didn't result in any misses. It's a fine line and one that's easy to fall over. It was a great support. Had loads of my family here and it was great to have them all here."

Olympics 2024: Team GB star Lucy Renshall reflects on ‘cruel’ judo after defeat at Paris Olympics

Lucy Renshall described Judo as a “cruel sport” after suffering defeat to Lubjana Piovesana at the Paris Olympics.

The Team GB athlete was eliminated in the women’s Judo - 63kg event in the second round. Her opponent Piovesana, who was a GB athlete until 2021 but now represents Austria, secured a 1-0 win in golden score.

“Judo is such a cruel sport,” Renshall admitted through tears in an interview with BBC Sport.

“The last 12 weeks have probably been the best 12 weeks of training I’ve ever done... I felt I had more to give.”

The world champion will go again now, for his second run in the park freestyle...

Early twist, then a no-hander, followed by a bar spin.

He reverses the bars, adds another bar spin and twists in the process.

Now a tailwhip, then a front flip – he’s the only man to try that today, and he’s pulled it off once in each of his runs!

Double-tailwhip, a further tailwhip, and a bar spin.

Late on, a no-hander while twisting in the air, and that secures him a score of 90.75.

He’s definitely through to the final, and after his final competitor completes their last run... we now know Reilly is going through first!

Olympics: Tennis players in line for heat break

15:07 , Karl Matchett

Tennis players at the Olympics will be allowed a 10-minute break between the second and third sets in singles on Tuesday due to extreme heat, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) said.

With the Paris temperature expected to reach 35 degrees Celsius (95°F) the decision was based on the so-called “Wet Bulb Globe Temperature” which measures potential heat stress in direct sunlight.

During the break, to be granted at the request of either player, players can take a shower, change their outfit, have something to eat or drink or go to the bathroom but they cannot have medical treatment or talk with their coach, under ITF rules.

Doubles matches, which are settled with a match tiebreak at one set all, would not feature the 10-minute break, the ITF said.

If the temperature at Roland Garros continued to rise, a panel including the tournament referee and medical professionals, could decide to suspend play.

The women’s tennis has reached the third round while the men were playing second-round matches on Tuesday.

Olympics 2024: Carl Hester urges second chance for Charlotte Dujardin after horse whipping scandal

14:49 , Paul Martin

Carl Hester believes Charlotte Dujardin deserves a second chance from the British public as she battles to save her career.

Hester, 57, gave Dujardin a job at his yard in 2007 and has been her key mentor on a journey which led to six Olympic medals.

Her chances of adding to that tally at Paris 2024 – and becoming Britain’s most decorated female Olympian – were dashed when a video was released of her whipping a horse in training, leading to the 39-year-old’s withdrawal on the eve of the Games.

Hester condemned her actions in the clip, and even signed a letter to that effect, but insists the incident was out of character.

“The video was a huge shock to me, I didn’t know it was there and it’s not from my property,” said the 57-year-old. “That video is fairly obvious and no one will support that. You can’t. But over 17 years of knowing Charlotte, I have not seen that. That is not her.”

China 19-15 Team GB

Dear oh dear! A moment of madness from Isla Norman-Bell has cost Team GB dearly. With the clock in the red and GB leading China 15-14 in a thrilling rugby sevens clash, Norman-Bell throws the ball out of play to try and end the match. But you can’t just throw a ball into touch to bring the final whistle, the ball has to be kicked off or you have to be tackled into touch.

It’s a China penalty and they spread the ball back and forth across the pitch to score in the corner and pinch a 19-15 win! That means China will play off against either France or Ireland (who play shortly) for fifth place, with Team GB facing the loser in a battle for seventh at 5pm. Not the result GB were after in this tournament as they targeted a medal.

Olympics 2024: Rugby sevens star Amy Wilson Hardy withdrawn from Olympics

Some news from the British Olympic Association. We reported earlier that the BOA were investigating Team GB rugby sevens star Amy Wilson Hardy for a ‘racist message’ sent on WhatsApp that was leaked on Instagram last night.

That investigation is ongoing but Wilson Hardy has now been “withdrawn on medical grounds from Paris 2024” ahead of the rugby sevens placement matches today.

A BOA spokesperson said: “The British Olympic Association has confirmed that Amy Wilson Hardy has been withdrawn on medical grounds from the Paris 2024 rugby sevens placement matches and will be replaced by Tokyo 2020 Olympian Abi Burton.”

After their quarter-final defeat to USA yesterday, Team GB are merely battling for fifth to eight place today. They’re actually in action as I type, facing China in the first of those matches and are 14-10 behind at half-time.

Olympics 2024: Triathlon farce is the inevitable result of Paris 2024’s £1bn gamble

12:25 , Lawrence Ostlere

“We know that there’s going to be some E coli exposure, so I just try to increase my E coli threshold by exposing myself to a bit of E coli in day-to-day life,” American triathlete Seth Rider said this week, in an actual quote from an actual Olympian. “And it’s backed by science. Proven methods. Just little things throughout your day, like not washing your hands after you go to the bathroom.”

In what has become one of the more bizarre stories of these Olympic Games, professional athletes are upping their intake of faecal bacteria for marginal gain. Rider’s meticulous preparation may yet be of no use: on Tuesday morning he would have woken at around 4am ready for the Olympic triathlon event only to discover that it had been postponed by 26 hours because the Seine failed to meet hygiene levels required for swimming.

It is a mess that has long been on the horizon. Scientists have been running daily checks for months and have found the Seine too polluted for competitive racing for most of the year, as rainwater constantly washed wastewater into the river.
