3 agencies respond to multi-acre fire in Beaver Tail

DE BEQUE, Colo. (KREX) — An evening fire that started around a few acres quickly nearly tripled in size around the Beaver Tail area east of Grand Junction.

The fire, estimated to be between 10 to 13 acres, started around 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 2. The fire, which is above Interstate 70, mile marker 51 in De Beque Canyon, was around 3 to 5 acres about an hour after it started before increasing in size.

An estimated containment or control time is still unknown at this time. There are also no Interstate 70 closures planned at this point, according to the Bureau of Land Managment (BLM).

Four single engine air tankers, one large air tanker, one Type 1 helicopter, two Type 2 handcrews and multiple engines are working on containing the fire, BLM Public Information Officer Heather Marsh told WesternSlopeNow.com.

The Beaver Tail fire has produced highly visible smoke that can be viewed from the Grand Valley, Marsh said.

Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit, Mesa County Sheriff’s Office and De Beque Fire Protection District are assisting on the scene.
