3 children and 1 adult rescued after getting lost on a Scottsdale mountain

Three children and one adult were transported off of a hiking trail in Scottsdale Friday morning and treated for heat exhaustion after getting lost during a family reunion hike.

Officials said the rescue involved a 12-month-old and an 18-month-old child.

Scottsdale Fire officials received reports of 13 lost hikers at the McDowell Sonoran Preserve around 10 a.m. near the Gateway Trailhead, with a report of a 10-year-old girl experiencing heat exhaustion.

The hikers told dispatchers they were low on water and their phones were less than 5% charged.

Rescue crews located the family about two miles from the trailhead, resting in the shade of a tree in a wash near the trail.

The three children, including the 10-year-old girl, 18-month-old and 12-month-old child, were quickly transported off of the trail and taken to a nearby children's hospital. An adult woman in the group was also transported off of the trail, according to officials.

The rest of the family were able to walk back to the trailhead with support of rescue crews.

Scottsdale Fire officials said the 10-year-old girl was in good condition Friday afternoon, but the status of the two young children was not available.

Officials said the hikers began their family reunion activity around 7:30 a.m., with family members visiting from outside of Phoenix. They became lost on the trail and started running low on water.
