Three people have died and six others were injured after a shooting broke out during a gathering in West Philadelphia.

On Sunday, July 21, the Philadelphia Police Department confirmed in an update on Facebook that a "senseless shooting" had taken place on 1200 Alden Street that morning. Police stated in a news release obtained by PEOPLE that the incident occurred at 2:02 a.m. local time.

"Upon arrival, officers located multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Preliminary information indicates an exchange of gunfire between multiple parties resulting in a nonuple shooting and triple homicide," police said, per Facebook.

"Multiple calibers of FCCs were recovered from the scene, which is consistent with an exchange of gunfire between individuals on location," authorities continued, adding that an "investigation is ongoing."

Per the Associated Press, more than 100 people had been at the party in the Carroll Park neighborhood when the shooting occurred.

According to the outlet, Inspector D.F. Pace said that the man who died at the scene was shot at close range and appeared to have been the intended target. No arrests were "immediately reported."

"It appears that there were multiple shooters. It's unclear at this time how many. But we have counted at least 25 to 30 spent shell casings at this time," Pace said, per ABC affiliate WPVI. "We're not sure if it was a block party or just simply a group of individuals who were invited from other parts of the city. It's just not clear at this time."
