3-year road to improvements on busy 3-mile stretch of Route 58 in Suffolk

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — By the end of this year, drivers traveling on the Holland Road corridor on Route 58 in Suffolk could have a smoother, and perhaps faster, commute thanks to a three-mile widening project funded by the Virginia Department of Transportation.

“Two-thirds of all the traffic in and out of Hampton Roads comes through our city and this is one of those major corridors,” city of Suffolk’s Public Works Director Robert Lewis said. “The point is to widen the piece of 58 that starts at the western end of our Suffolk downtown bypass and goes west 3.2 miles.”

It could also be a remedy for heavy traffic.

“It was becoming very busy, very congested so we’ve embarked on this project to now convert that into a six-lane highway, three eastbound, three westbound,” Lewis said.

It is scheduled to be complete by Dec. 10. Residents like Eddie Atkins, who lives directly off Holland Road, say it can’t come fast enough.

“I deal with it every day so, ugh, it’s been a big mess,” Atkins said.

The project is important to him for one main reason — he hopes to turn his home into a rental property, but fears the traffic is keeping potential tenants away.

“Yes, people right now are reluctant to come in the area and live because of problems with the road and its congestion,” he said.

“In the end, we believe they’ll have a much better experience getting in and out of the homes,” Lewis said.

Some of the safety upgrades coming to the corridor are sidewalks, a trail, wider medians and new traffic signals. To learn more, click here.
