38-year-old Lakeland man dies in accident on Combee Road. Wife and son injured

A 38-year-old Lakeland man was killed late Wednesday night when the car he was driving left the roadway and hit a concrete traffic signal support pole in North Lakeland, police said.

The Lakeland Police Department said the crash happened just before 11 p.m. on North Combee Road near State Road 33.

In a news release, police said Mitchell Parker, 38, was driving a 2010 Chrysler van north on Combee Road when, for unknown reasons, the van left the road and drove northwest on the grassy shoulder, striking the heavy concrete support pole.

LPD, Polk County Fire Rescue and the Lakeland Fire Department responded and began life-saving measures, but Parker died at the scene. The front passenger, Mitchell Parker's wife, Jennifer Parker, 31, of Lakeland, was taken to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center with critical injuries. Their 9-year-old son, who was riding in the rear seats, was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital with what police described as non-life-threatening injuries.

The road was shut down for four hours. The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to contact Traffic Crash Investigator Officer Travis Payne at travis.payne@lakelandgov.net.
