When authorities arrived at the scene, they said they found the victim and provided medical care until the Nashville Fire Department took over. An ambulance brought the victim to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

After reviewing surveillance cameras in the area, Homicide Unit detectives believe the victim was walking along Lewis Street with a pistol in his hand when he had “a verbal exchange” with another person, according to officials. Then, gunfire reportedly erupted between the victim and another unknown individual.

Police said the victim was hit and fled along Lewis Street before he collapsed. The victim allegedly tossed his gun over a fence onto Metro Water Department property, but the weapon was later recovered.

The investigation into Sunday’s incident — including the identity of the man who was fatally shot — is still ongoing. No additional details have been released.
