4.9 earthquake hits Texas' Permian Basin

A series of earthquakes shook West Texas, including a 4.9 magnitude event that was centered in Scurry County.

The quake was centered 17 miles northeast of Hermleigh, Texas around 10:30 p.m. July 22. The USGS said it was Texas' eighth largest earthquake in history.

It was followed by two other quakes of lesser magnitude in a region of West Texas that houses the Permian Basin. The Permian Basin, shared with New Mexico, is the nation's largest crude oil and natural gas producer.

The quake was felt in Lubbock, Midland and Abilene.
