$50,000 Powerball prize thought to be $100 won at Independence gas station

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — A woman at an Independence gas station was caught by surprise after winning a $50,000 Powerball prize.

She purchased the Powerball ticket from Food & Fuel Expresso at 4200 S. Lee’s Summit Road, receiving a much bigger amount than she expected.

“When I took it in, I thought it was just for $100,” the winner recalled. “I said to the clerk, ‘I don’t know how much you guys pay out. I think maybe up to $100?'”

In a delightful turn of events, she was wrong.

“The clerk said, ‘This is more than $100!’ she said. “I was quite surprised, to say the least.”

Her ticket matched four of the five white-ball numbers, including the Powerball in the May 25 drawing to win $50,000.

The winning numbers were 6, 33, 35, 36 and 64, with a Powerball of 24. If her ticket would’ve matched all the numbers, she would’ve won the $120 million jackpot.

“I just missed one number. I can’t even imagine that!” she said.
