9 people hurt in stabbing at strip mall in northwest Indianapolis

Update: Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears announced June 24, 2024 a man has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, aggravated battery and three counts of battery for his alleged role in the "serial stabbing" in the parking lot of a bar in the 7100 block of Woodland Drive. The man suffered injuries during the stabbing and remains in critical condition.

Previous coverage: INDIANAPOLIS — Nine people were injured during a stabbing in a parking lot on the city's northwest side, police said.

The stabbing scene unfolded about 3:40 a.m. in the parking lot outside Miami's Garden Restaurant and Lounge, 7102 Woodland Drive, near the intersection of West 71st Street and 465.

The general manager at Miami's Garden said the stabbing took place after the restaurant had closed. He said restaurant security guards tried to break up the fight but that no security guards or restaurant employees were injured.

Investigators believe a disturbance between two groups preempted the stabbings.

Those injured suffered stab wounds or "some type of trauma," Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Public Information Officer William Young told media at the scene.

The injured include:

  • 4 people were treated and released at the scene.

  • 3 people were listed in critical condition, including a suspect

  • 2 people were listed in stable condition

Crime scene tape still hangs in the parking lot outside Miami's Garden Restaurant and Lounge, 7121 Woodland Drive, after a stabbing in the parking lot there left several people hurt early Monday, June 17, 2024.

One suspect in the case is being treated at an area hospital after having suffered trauma, Young said. Police later said a second suspect was detained.

Officers are speaking to multiple witnesses and will ask local businesses for camera footage, Young said.

Michelle Stith, who works at a gas station nearby said the stabbing isn't normal for the area.

“I’ve been working here eight years, and this is the first time I’ve ever heard of an incident like this happening,” she said.

Miami’s Garden is an African Restaurant and Lounge that opened in 2022. The restaurant operates under a Beer and Wine Retailer Restaurant license, which was last renewed in March.

This morning's stabbing was not the first case of disturbances at the strip mall address. According to police reports available online, shootings were reported in March and December 2023 in the parking lot outside the restaurant and lounge.

No arrests were announced in the case at time of publication.

Investigators are asking anyone in the area to contact the police department.
