9-year-old killed after semi plows into backed-up traffic on I-465 identified

INDIANAPOLIS — A 9-year-old boy killed Thursday when a driver plowed a semi truck into backed-up traffic on I-465 in Indianapolis has been identified by the Marion County Coroner’s Office.

The crash was reported at 5:20 p.m. Thursday by “multiple frantic” calls to 911 about a serious crash on I-465 southbound near U.S. 31 on the south side of Indianapolis, according to Indiana State Police. First responders found a heavily damaged car with an unresponsive person entrapped inside.

An early investigation indicates the driver of a semi “failed to slow down” as he approached heavy traffic on the interstate, striking three passenger vehicles and another semi, police said.

The boy, identified as Eamon Charles Goodrich, was sitting in the back seat and died at the scene. The driver of the car, who was critically injured, and a 5-year-old girl were taken to a hospital. Police reported the girl had non-life-threatening injuries.

State Police said excessive speed by the driver led to the crash, as well as non-compliance with the Federal Motor Carrier Regulations hours of service. Drugs and alcohol are not suspected to have played a role.

No charges have been announced in the crash at time of publication.

Investigators and Motor Carrier Inspectors are continuing to investigate.
