ABC News Lands First Post-Debate Interview With President Biden

President Joe Biden is ready to meet the press following his disastrous debate performance last week.

ABC News has scored the first, exclusive post-debate sit-down with the president, who is seeking to reassure voters about his health and reelection candidacy. Biden is facing calls to step down in the wake of his faltering live 90-minute performance last Thursday against Donald Trump, which raised questions about his mental capacity.

The president will be interviewed on the campaign trail Friday by Good Morning America co-anchor and This Week anchor George Stephanopoulos.

ABC News is planning a staggered rollout of the interview ,stretching across multiple programs.

A first look will air Friday, July 5, on World News Tonight with David Muir, with portions airing on Good Morning America on Saturday and Sunday as well.

The extended interview will air Sunday, July 7, on This Week With George Stephanopoulos and Good Morning America on Monday, July 8.

ABC News is also hosting the second presumed debate between Biden and Trump in September. Stephanopoulos previously told Stephen Colbert on CBS’ Late Show that he won’t be a moderator in the debate since Trump is currently suing him for defamation.

Since last Thursday’s debate, the Biden administration and its supporters have been furiously defending the president, maintaining he merely had a “bad night” and insisting that he remains the best equipped Democrat to take on Trump in November.

Yet calls for Biden to step aside to allow other potential candidates secure the nomination have continued. On Tuesday, veteran Texas Rep. Lloyd Doggett became the first sitting Democratic member of Congress to call on Biden to quit the race.

Post-debate polling is still relatively sparse, but early indications suggest Trump has gained some ground, though not by a dramatic amount and still roughly within the polling margin of error.

Stephanopoulos has worked for ABC News for more than 20 years and spent time in the White House, serving as former President Bill Clinton’s senior adviser for policy and strategy during his first term after being part of the Clinton campaign team during the 1992 election.
