Abigail Disney Turns Off Biden Money Tap, Saying “We Have An Excellent VP”; Barry Diller, Others Do Same

Jeffrey Katzenberg hasn’t said anything yet, but more big Democratic donors are speaking out for Joe Biden to step aside after last week’s debate debacle.

Outspoken Disney heiress and documentary filmmaker Abigail Disney has weighed in on Biden post-debate, telling CNBC she plans to pause all donations to the Democratic party unless or until he steps aside as a candidate.

She urged Dems to rally around Kamala Harris, saying, “We have an excellent VP.”

Her comments follow the president’s wobbly performance with presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump last week that created a tsunami of angst among Democrats and calls by some for the 81-year-old to cede the field to someone else and soon. A number of top donors have expressed dismay and doubt after Biden sounded unintelligible in parts, appeared tired and seemed unprepared for obvious questions.

The White House has said Biden will “absolutely” not step back. POTUS is sitting down in an interview today with George Stephanopoulos, airing this evening in an ABC primetime special, for damage control.

“I intend to stop any contributions to the party unless and until they replace Biden at the top of the ticket. This is realism, not disrespect. Biden is a good man and has served his country admirably, but the stakes are far too high,” Disney said in a statement to the network.

She made the case for VP Harris. “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity) and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”

Meanwhile, The Ankler reported that Barry Dilller said no when asked if he and his wife Diane Von Furstenberg will continue to support Biden.

In a Deadline guest column, longtime Democratic donor Damon Lindelof was the first to go public asking for Biden to withdraw. He was followed by Netflix founder Reed Hastings, who also said Biden needs to step aside. A series of other big donors began to turn the money tap off, Deadline hears.

A majority of those donors have said that they are going to wait until Biden’s interview airs tonight to make a final decision about going public themselves. However, sources familiar with Biden’s meeting with Democratic governors Friday were unconvinced that the president has a viable path to go forward. The main headlines emerging out of that meeting were that Biden said he needs more sleep.

A few in Hollywood have offered support, sort of. Sharon Stone noted that more women are registered to vote than any other singular group. “So, ladies, remember this: No matter how sleepy Joe may have seemed, he’s wide awake for you,” she said. “So vote, for yourself.”
