Shyla Goracke in custody after son, 9, fatally stabbed south of Lake Sherwood near Topeka

A 9-year-old boy's mother was taken into custody after he was fatally stabbed late Thursday morning in a house just south of Lake Sherwood in southwest Shawnee County, a county sheriff's office spokeswoman said.

The sheriff's office hadn't released the boy's name as of Friday afternoon.

"The mother of the deceased child, Shyla M. Goracke, 29, of Topeka, has been placed into custody in connection with the matter," said Shawnee County sheriff's deputy Abigail Christian. "She is currently at a local hospital."

Shawnee County dispatchers just after 11:30 a.m. received a 911 call to the scene at 3911 S.W. Worwick Town Road.

"Upon arrival, deputies found a 9-year-old child located inside the residence, suffering from multiple wounds to the chest and neck," Christian said. "The child was pronounced deceased at the scene."

No further details were available.

Additional information was expected to be released as the investigation progressed, Christian said.
